Subject: Squeaking Belt?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello all,

I have a squeak that is driving me nuts. It sounds like the serpentine belt, but when I spray with belt conditioner/dressing, the problem only goes away for a short while. I did replace this belt about 25,000 miles ago. Are there any components that I should look at while replacing this belt again. I'm thinking of looking at the A/C compressor, tensioner pulley and the small pulley in the center (idler pulley).

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thx - Drew

I have had this happen twice to me now... the belt sprad dosen't do anything but make a mess.. I let's me know it's time to replace it... I went out and bought a new belt and solved the problem. That is the easiest fix I have for it. I don't know why they start to squeal but it is extremely annoying... if you want you can try rubbing a candle on the belt, sometimes the wax helps... jut could just make a bigger mess.

How do you change the belt, I have 31,000 on my 4.7 and it looks like it needs to be changed. Is that normal mileage to change it?

that mileage sound about right, I always change them b/c being stuck if it broke would suck... All you have to do is put a wrench on the tensioner and putt it towards the engine... it is spring loaded and you can slip the belt off one of the pullies.. then you can slip it off the crank and around the fan... the new one goes on the same but will probably take some work to get it over the last pulley... some go on easily but the last one I installed was kinda dificult... it was a little on the short side and took some work to get it on... but all in all took probably 15 minutes total work time... I would also check the bearings in the water pump, power steering pump, and all the idler pulleys while your in there...
