I have finally decided to do something about the 318 I have sitting in the garage. I have a 93 Dakota with the 3.9 V-6 and I want to throw in a 318 out of a 85 RamCharger, I don't know if the engine would bolt up to the current 4sp/od trans that is in their now. But the thing I would really like to know is if the 318 2bb out of the RamCharger is a 2 bolt or 4 bolt design. I would love to put a 4 bbl on it/ other performance add ons, but if it is a 2 bolt I don't think I will do anything with this motor. Can anyone tell me if the engine is a 2 bolt or a 4 bolt design?

the engine will bolt up, but there are other problems. your torque converter needs to match the transmission(flywheel if manual). if an automatic you have an a500 light duty trans, may be ok, but the o/d units on these are pretty light duty. you'll have to watch the o/d off feature and rig some other way to make it work because it's tied in with the computer. hope this helps

The Overdrive units are the same in the A500 and A518, 400 ft/lbs torque input in stock configuration. One advantage in the 518 is that it has larger cooling passages....so run a big external tranny cooler to address this issue.
The 3.9 was based on the 5.2 to begin with. Everything bolts up. They even share torque converters since they are both internally balanced and neither requires external balance weight like the 360 does.
318's are a 2-bolt design. However, unlike bowtie products (as is the "2-bolt" reference), the 2-bolt Mopars are more heavily built and a 2-bolt will easily handle 6,000+ rpm 400hp runs without an issue. When building to that level, it is wise to upgrade the bolts to high-quality ARP products.
The bigger issue is the lack of mounting access as on the Magnum blocks. The Dakotas mount to the lower middle section of the blocks. Earlier LA's do not have these mount points.
And yes, I know the original post was in 2003, but someone else may find this info useful.

I'm thinking the same thing - this has got to be a Chevy guy if he's worried about 2 bolt mains.
