~1997 5.2L 5 spd Dakota Sport reg cab 65k miles- i got in my car today to go to pepboys and about 5 mins on the road i shifted into first from a red light and as i released the clutch it made an very loud noise past 25% release. (sounds like if the trans is somewhat connected to the engine and grindin like a mo fo) i had to coast home and ride the clutch (oouch)for half a mile i cant go more then a few mph. my question- is this the shifter linkage (it seems to shift fine) or the clutch (it feels strong) or something else? oh yea i need to fix this b/c truck wont drive anywhere! and anybody know where to check/add tranny fluid in a manual? i cant find a fill plug and the manual doesnt mention this.

Climb under the truck, find the tranny and there is two plugs with a huge allan key head. One is on the bottom (drain) and the other one is on the left side(fill). Just pour in until it pours out..Hope this helps ya!!

Sounds like you stripped the spline out of the clutch disc,or maybe broke the flex coupling between the spline hub and disc. Remove the inspection plate at the bottom of the bell housing and see if there is chewed up metal in there. If it makes the noise in any gear it is most likely the clutch. If you put the trans in fourth gear and it doesn't do it, it's probably the input shaft or the counter shaft.
