I've seen guys installing Hurst (and other high performance) automatic floor shifters in their automatics. Is their any advantage to this over the stock shifter on the steering column? This may be a stupid question, just wondering though...

Darcy, It is just cooler looking and eliminates cruise control, I remember buying a 71 Charger SE a few years back, shifter on the colum was dorky but nice car, I think the RT Charger had the counsel and floorshifter,,,much nicer!

its a setting you can put the shifter on. If you pull the shifter all the way back you can get it in "ratchet" mode... now to shift gears you done have to move the shifter... all you have to do is "slap" it forward each time you wanna shift.. a.k.a. slap shifter.

That's awesome! And yours was an auto to start with right?? So you can actually shift through the gears like a manual?? What model shifter was it?? How much?? I want one! Was it tough to install??
Basicaly it's like a tiptronic or F1 style shifter right?? Will it let you downshift as well?

not quite like an F1 shifter, more like a drag shifter, you pull it all the way back and can slap the hell outta it and it won't shift more than 1 gear at a time, you still have OD but you lose the option of turning it off... you can down shift it manually but it is kinda clumbsy, not what it was intended to do.

you can turn your o/d off.... you just need to make a momentary switch for it. I havent done it yet myself because of laziness. When i ran the quarter i got a better time with the o/d on because my trap speed was 103... cant do that in third gear ;-)

Why do you lose cruise control? I agree all you need to do is mount a montary switch on the dash somewhere.

Thinking about this myself. I have heard that adjusting this to work correctly is the only fairly hard/pain in the ass part.

there is no reason you would loose cruise control... it his hooked up to your steering wheel and you dont do anything to the hard lines or wires to it. adjusting the linkage is by far the hardest part to do. I still dont have mine perfect.

For the OD just use the B&M T-handle with a button and wire it to leads that you cut when you removed your column shifter. Polarity doesn't matter. One word of warning this conversion is kind of a B@tch. Difficulty wise.

I realize that I am resurecting an old thread, but hopefully I can get some answers from IntenseDak39

Did you mount it right to the floor or is it on a console?
Do you have to drop the tranny?
Did you also install a shift kit? How difficult was that?

To hook up the cable, will I need to drop the tranny? I was also wondering how difficult it is to install a shift kit in the tranny. I tried to email you using the address in your profile but it bounced back as invalid. Thnaks

shift kits are not for the beginner... there's a little difficulty to them.

you do not have to drop the tranny to hook up the shift cable.. You will however have to make a mount for the cable to go through before it connects to the shifter lever.
