Subject: Painting the front bumper

Message:
Who here has painted the front bumper to match the body? Anyone had any problems or have any tips?
The body shop near me said that it could be a problem since the bumper has a slight texture to it (2002) and that even if they sand it all down it might still start to flake off a few months down the road because "it wasn't meant to be painted". He also wanted to charge me $300 (Canadian). This really surprised me because it seems like alot of people have done this and this is a VERY reputable body shop that shoudl know what they are doing... (they do alot of work on high end cars and exotics... mainly Porsches...)

If you have the time, material and patience do it, how ever a couple of tips that might help,,first they are right about the texture, you may go ahead and get some 400-600 grit wet and dry sand paper to knock it down, take your time and be EVEN,second get a laquer thinner and wipe the plastic down (FAST and LIGHT!! prolonged contact will melt it!)to eliminate any oil film that may cause "fish-eye"and get fish-eye eliminator to mix with paint to help as well and get tackywipes from paint supply shop and wipe down to eliminate dust pre, third and most important get flexagent for your base color and top coat, these arejustacoupleof things to help a little theresmore to itso you may want to consider having a shop do it but thats your call,,,good luckeither way!
