Subject: 5.9 short/long blocks??
IP: Logged

Message:
I am looking at the 360 short and long blocks from Mopar and have a few questions. I was looking at the MPI Magnum short block (P5007549). This is the shortblock that I want but it says it has cast pistons. I am planning on running a 75-100 hp shot of N2O so this is unacceptable. I look at the “Magnum” short blocks (P4876906) and (P4876913) and they have hypereutectic pistons. But the lifts of these two cams at .501/.513 are above the lifts magnum heads are allowed. It is .500 correct? I am planning on using “cleaned up” stock heads, 3 angle valve job, and a bit of smoothing and cleaning. The deck heights are different between these blocks at 9.56 to 9.595. Will this be a problem?
If the .501/.513 lifts are ok for my stock heads then what “Magnum” short block, compression ratio would be better for my combo? Cleaned up heads, Mopar converter, 4200# CC, 3.55 gears, and M-1 manifold, (P4876906) 9.5:1 CR or (P4876913) 10.5:1 CR. Is the deck height difference going to hurt intake manifold sealing? Is this cam to much for the heads? To much for a daily driver 4200# truck w/ 3.55 gears? I still need the torque to get my fat ass moving.

To throw another log into the fire. Can the 300hp long block (P5249498) work with my SMPI fuel injection? Are the “swirl port” heads they refer to in the description the same as my stock heads? And just to go a bit more wild what about the 380 hp long block (P5249499)? Same questions as above but also why will this not work with air conditioning? These two long block have hypereutectic pistions correct?

And yes the trans. will be rebuilt to handle the extra fun!!
Sorry this is so long but you can never ask to many questions befor doing this.

Thanks for all help,

Nathaniel

I ran a Hughes Engines .511" lift cam in my 5.2L for over a year, with stock heads (and stock rockers) with Hughes Springs...

I'm now running the Kammer Racing .512"-.512" cam with custom ported magnum heads and am running 1.6:1 Crane Gold Race Rockers and Comp Springs...

I do recommend better springs when changing to a bigger Cam...

Later!

I'm also concidering both of those short blocks that you had mentioned. See my Cracked Block post. I was also wondering about the compression difference. If I do go with the short block, I'd be adding the M-1 to it as well. What are the pros and cons of the two compression ratios with that setup?
