You know, I think this is great. Since I started this thread on 12/31/02, it has taken on a life of its own you might say. I never thought that so much valuable info could come out of a sigle question from almost a year ago. Thanks to one and all who have posted here. I for one have learned a lot!

Hey Mike, so how did it all turn out? I'm doing something similar with a warmed-over 360 Magnum in my '89 Shelby. Just wondering about your overall impressions and observations since you started.

Well, unfortunately, since my original post I've fallen on hard times and haven't had the money to do the swap yet. I hope to within the next year though. I'm encouraged by the info that has been posted here by all who have contributed and I think the swap should go pretty well if I'm ever able to do it. I need to because my truck just rolled over 250,000 miles on the original engine and it's starting to get tired. It doesn't have the same zip as when it was new and my mileage is down to 14 mpg where it had been 18.5 when I got it and the tranny is starting to go south also.

Hey, I know how it is. I got in backwards on my swap project. Somewhere along the way they pulled the little electronic tranny gig. I'd bought a 360 Magnum/46RE pulled from a wrecked 2001 Ram (1500 miles on it). Then I started learning about OBD II and just what a 46RE was. I really wanted the 360 to be warmed up some, despite the fact that a 75hp increase would be very nice. Two years later and I'm still looking at the engine. I have managed to snag an M1 and a sweet cam. Couldn't have done it without eBay. Just got the double roller timing gears set. Looking at buttoning it up soon, but I keep running into another upgrade I'd like to add, because when I put it in, I don't wanna have to fool with it for a long time. The tranny is another issue. Looking at my deal, I essentially got the tranny for free. I figured I should be able to swap out a few things and have a 46RH. So far it looks do-able. I'm just having to swap out my A-500 overdrive housing and output shaft. The housing isn't a big deal, but to have to totally disassemble the OD for the shaft sucks. The new shafts don't have the hole and keyway for the governor assembly. One solution leads to 2 new issues. Naturally, in hindsight, I'd have done things differently, but at least I've learned a tremendous amount about the whole thing. It will be one bad honker when finished. The thing that keeps me goin' is thinking about droppin' the hammer!

It sounds like it will really scoot when you're done with it! hehe. The main reason for my wanting to do the 360 swap is because it really chaps my *** to get smoked by a friggin Mustang! I'm hoping that some day soon I'll have the money to take a 360 Magnum and put an RV II cam in and the Mopar Performance ECM and MSD ignition and then rebuild the tranny to take the extra torque. I also want to swap out the rearend for one out of a Dakota RT because I've heard that the RT has a 9 1/4'' ring gear and limited slip and they also came with optional rear disk brakes. If someone knows the answer to that then please feel free to pipe up. When it's all said and done I want to lower the truck a little. About the same as an RT and then paint it black with tinted windows and custom wheels and tires. I also want to get rid of the 2 1/2'' dual exhaust I have now and go with 3 ''. Does anyone know how loud these trucks are with glasspacks? That's my dream truck. If it ever comes to reality. Don't know if it ever will though. :(

Driver's side mounts are slightly narrower for the 340/360. You could probably fashion a little spacer deal to take up the slack...a couple flat washers. You'll see what I mean. Passenger side mounts are the same. The tranny will line up perfectly, but it will require the torque converter from the 360, or a converter balanced for the 360. B&M sells a plate that bolts to the converter that balances a 318 converter to 360 specs. Not sure what you're gonna do.

318 out of a RC will work. Keep in mind that magnum 318s were only in the 92-93 RC. You can put a non magnum engine in, but you will be losing power and you will need a new wiring harness and PCM from an earlier truck, at least on the TBI models. You can also go full carb if you want.

3 grand plus shipping for a complete engine/tranny pull with 1500 miles on it, plus cam, springs, etc. Tranny gasket kit. So, an easy $4500. In hindsight, I would have done things differently, but at the time, there weren't as many options as there are now, and I was looking at a fresh engine that could drop in and run. If I were starting today, I'd totally rework the stock 318 with hi-po parts, and spend the cash on a performance-built tranny.

so i just went thru and read all the posts on this thread. i have a 93 dakota 5.2 4x4 and i was kind of looking for all the information given here but not until i have enough cash lol. i was really wondering what tranny my truck had and from what i read it is an a-518. is that correct? also i was wondering if someone knew where to get a shift kit for this tranny. most everything i find is for a 727 and a 904. and i dont have the cash to swap trannies. looking to build a good street truck/tow rig and also something good for the mud.

You do have an A-518 although it will also be referred to as a 46RH. It's essentially a 727 with overdrive. Transgo makes a good shift kit for it.

I am swapping a 318 to a 360 in my '95 Dodge Ram 1500. It is 4wd and manual trani. The 360 is coming out of a '97 Dodge van with an automatic trani. Will the PCM be compatible? Also, will the flywheel from a 318 go on the 360 and will the crank positioning sensor from the 318 work on the 360? Thanks for any help in advance.

Crank position sensor will work.
The 360 will need to have a pilot bushing installed in the crank for the manual tranny.
Flywheel will fit, but will need to be rebalanced for the 360 Magnum (will have to have weight added).
Best to get a '95 PCM for 360 Ram 4WD manual. The stock 318 PCM will run the 360, but not great.
