Subject: ABS/Brake light...different problem.

Hey everyone. I know there's tons of posts on here about the ABS/Brake lights coming on, and that the problem is the speed sensor on the diff, but I think I have something different going on. I've got a 99 5.2L 4X4 SLT w/4 wheel ABS. When I make tight turns like a u-turn or turning into a 90 degree parking space, my ABS and Brake lights will come on. Sometimes they stay on till I shut off and start up again, sometimes they turn off right when I complete the turn. Also, if I start my truck with my foot on the brake, the lights will come on and stay on till I remove my foot and something under the hood (part of the brake system) makes some kind of grinding noise. Usually I just wait to start it till I hear the grinding noise (lasts about a second, right after the fuel pump finishes), then I start it up and I dont get the lights. Could these problems be related? The lights don't bother me so much, but I am concerned I wont have ABS when I really need it. Thanks for the help!

Does your speedo work? I replaced the sensor on rear diff on my '99 over the summer, as speedo didn't work. I've only got rear wheel abs though. Here's a couple of thoughts. You might check front wheel sensors for loose wires, misallignment, etc. since you said it sometimes happens in sharp turns. I've heard that abs systems will sometimes self test at beginning of ignition cycle, that may be normal. You might also bleed some fluid out and get some new fluid in.

Yeah my speedo works. Thanks for the other tips. I know I need to change the brake fluid, can that really cause it? I hope it isnt the front system, that stuff looks a bit intimidating :)Thanks again

Brake lights not working is something electrical. Check the connections at the bulb socket if the fuses are good. Connections get corroded and such and prevent power from passing. If all of the lights failed, check fuses again and check the switch that activates them. Do the running lights work? If so that points to the switch that activates the brake light curcuit.

Fierman, check that rear sensor, thats the most common failure causing the ABS/BRAKE lights on the dash to come on. On mine, it was a front sensor wire that was rubbing on the inside of the wheel until it exposed bare wire and shorted out on sharp turns. New, and re-routed, wire solved that.

Get your front end checked out. Not every part on your vehicle has a sensor to indicate when there is a problem; you can't expect that.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Check the wire from your caliper to where it connects near the front grill... the sensor is on the front hub. it could be loose or bad. also inside the hub where the sensor goes in could be falling apart.
