I have a 99 318 auto. I have had a oil burning smell coming from the exhaust for a month. I was told it was the belly pan gasket on the "beer barrel". So I decided to buy the M1 from MP. It has been on for a little over a week and I still have a oil burning smell. What else could be causing this problem?

If the smell is comeing from the exhaust pipe it is most likely one of the following: valve guides, valve seals or rings. While this is seldom the cause of an oil burning smell sometimes a defective pcv valve can send exsive amounts of oil back into the system.

well... i hope its not something deep inside the engine since i bought the engine from KRC. As for the pcv valve... the baffles in the valve covers were removed by KRC... could oil be splashed up in the pcv?

Yeah, could be the PCV... how many miles on the engine? Is it actually -using- oil? Do you know if it was properly broken in?

Pull the PCV valve and do the rattle test. Like sandman said, if it's sticking open, it could be that. If your not noticing blue smoke at all, and the oil level does not appear to be dropping, I'd just keep an eye on it.

If you are doing any high G-Force loading oil can pool in the head and be drawn into the PCV system. This is why we put the PCV in the valley area on GM Gen III small blocks. We also installed a baffle/seperator to keep oil out of the system. I do not know Dodge designs very well but this could be hapening. If you were to do alot of high speed downshifting combined with high g loading this could be part of your problem.

It's probably the valve seals - it's a pretty common problem on magnum engines. It's on the list of crap I have to do on my '99 - it puffs a little when you start it - when I had the headers off I could see a little oil in all the exhaust ports.

The engine came from Marty at KRC . He told me it came form a guy that works with him ... i guess he put in a 360 .... it only had like 20K miles on t according to Marty .... as for break-in .. i have no clue... would the valve stem seals cause it to have the burning smell all the time ?

Well, it -is- pretty hard to diagnosis this with the information given.

Does the engine have the proper compression in the cylinders? Have you had a leak-down test performed on it? Is it actually -using- oil (I believe I asked this before but didn't get an answer).

Have you noticed any of the blue smoke puffs commonly associated with burning oil? Sometimes it's best to have someone rev the engine while you are watching the exhaust from outside. If it's puffing blue smoke, it's burning oil. If it's not puffing, and not using oil... have you changed the PVC? Had the Catlytic convertor checked (although that will be more of a rotten egg smell...)

If it always smells like burning oil, I'd have to think it's using oil. Valve seals generally just leak when cold, unless they are destroyed, if they really -are- that bad then you should be able to see a lot of blue smoke coming out the back. If your not seeing any blue smoke at all, and it's not using oil, I'd start checking for leaks on the engine itself.

I'm grasping at straws here. Find out if it's actually using oil, get a compression and leakdown test done, and watch for oil smoke puffs. This may be something that you take back to Marty and say, "Hey, it smells like it's burning oil, can you help me?" I'm sure if your polite and calm about it he'll do whatever he can to help, so don't march in with an attitude. Chances are he never went through it, if they just did an engine swap.

Give Marty a call and see if he can help you work the problem. He's always helped me out on stuff.

Are you pretty sure the smell is coming from teh exhaust? Here's some other ideas. Get a flashlight and crawl all over the motor. Check your valve covers to make sure you're not getting a drip. Check the oil sending unit on the back of the motor, that's a notorious leaker. Check the back corners of the motor where the intake manifold meets the heads and the block.

Good luck!

Hard to replace valve guide seals? Compression test tell me anything?
