I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota CC with the 318, I have noticed for the past few days when going down the highway(65+) the truck makes several noises(simalr to a blade hitting a spinning wheel and a knocking sound like someones inside a wooden box) and the noises go away when i make the truck downshift, but then my check engine light will blink anywhere from 10 to 30 times, anyone have a clue what this might be? This had started when it got cold. it has appox 106000 miles and the tranny was rebuilt at about 90000 miles, and around town the truck has just as much power as before. Any help would be nice.....

Sounds like pinging or severe detonation-- the blinking is a code for 'Miss Fire'... I bet you have a code stored 301, 302, 303-- or if it flashes a check eng light-- code 300 (multiple miss fire).

Check your plugs/wire/cap/rotor... See if that cures it-- Also, try a tank of 92 octane and see how that does...

Well the cap to wire thing is one thing to look into... but my neighbor is having the same problem and he is running 93 octane so i don't think that will solve anything... I also had my computer scanned and nothing came up... so i'm pretty lost... but i'll check my wires and such on... thanks for the idea tho.... but as i think bout it... this only happens on hills... well steep hills atleast.... So think ther'd be the same idea? Thanks for any help

Sounds like a miss then. Might have a bad plug, wire, or bad cap.rotor. Do a complete tune up.
