I have a 98 dakota r/t and today i began to change the brake pads in the front , but i was boggled by the pins on the calipers, does anyone know how to get those pins out, or how i can remove the calpier, the book says to just romove the pins but the pins are not a hex bolt, also i cannot use a allen wrench....also should i replace the shoes on the rear and if so are there any special suprises i should know about.
thanks for the help.....jojo

I have a 99' and it's an allen wrench. I went to autozone and asked them for the right size... they didn't know so I bought a two sizes. They are the allen wrench thingys that go on sock wrenches. I would go look in my tool box right now and tell you but it is three hours away from me right now. I just bought both sizes and took one back. Just go to autozone. They can show you were to look.

If it's like my 2000, the calipers take a T-45 Torx bit for your socket wrench.

What kind of brake pads are folks using?

I just got my POWERSLOT rotors from the group buy and have started researching the available pads. I am looking for a pad material that will NOT cover the front wheels with that black dust. (LOW DUSTING pad material)

So far I have found;
PERFORMANCE FRICTION CORP.- perhaps the biggesed supplier of brake shoes/pads on earth. They have everything from Carbon-metallic composite to titanium formulas available.

BENDIX- well known company has titanium/metallic

LUCAS/REPCO/AXXIS- apparently made in Austraila called POWERSTOP.... recommended by my POWERSLOT rotors. (obvioously the same company)

WILWOOD- Hi performance braking systems

HAWK PERFORMANCE- Will apparently custom-cut any pad matreial you want for your vehicle. Specilize in different pad materials for each type of driving.

I installed HAWK PERFORMANCE pads about 2k miles ago when the new Powerslots went on. There IS minimal brake dusting, but significantly less than with stock pads. Front "brake groan" has also decreased, but is still noticable at VERY slow-to-stop. Both the dust and "groan" are what I would consider "normal" (what I've experienced with other vehicles). Overall, I'm happy with the upgrade.

What you need is a torx t-45 bit, many tool co. make this bit with a 3/8 drive on it, and can buy just this one bit rather than a whole set. Make sure the torx bit is firmly set in, remove any debris first, I learned first hand that these can be hard to break loose & mess the head up and then you have a bigger problem, also some thing I've learned is impact's and fine thread don't work to well together, It will break loose a hard to remove bolt, but to much heat develops and then threads get messed up & changes the hardness of the bolts, If you don't seem to have any other choice & get it to start loosening (with impact) dont stop until its out or it very well may weld itself together!! I'm sorry for such a long post..

Ordered on-line from jegs.com. I think they were about $56.00 for the set, and had them on my door step the next day.

Does anyone know where you can get reasonable priced lids or tonneau covers? What is a good brake pad? Metallic? Titanium?
