Subject: 4.7 HO Cams?

Has anyone heard about getting an emission test on a Dakota 4.7L with the new H.O. camshafts installed? Also do the new camshafts make the exhaust sound any different?

The OEM exhaust after I installed the HO cams sounded a bit different. It was a little more "throaty".

Also thinking about the cam upgrade. Which did you go with and what kind of results did you get? Also, did you do it yourself? Did you use the HO intake?

I'm also intersted in the smog, especially in California. Will it still pass emissions?

JC,

I used the MOPAR H.O. cams from the Jeep Grand Cherokee that most people with the 4.7L used. I was very pleased with the results. My truck is a 4x4 so the extra low end torque will come in handy and it pulls harder now after shifting. Yes, I did it myself just as most people on the boards did. No, I did not opt for the H.O. Intake as I don't get the truck up in the 5000RPM range too often. My truck is a daily driver and I doubt it will ever see a 1/4 mile track. Although the local "ricers" et al get pretty grossed out when a 4x4 Dak leaves them looking at tail lights. I get mostly positive comments about my truck.

Regards,
Aaron

I gather that the smog will not be an issue. The only mods people are making that effect there smog is the lower thermostat and a cold air intake that isn't carb approved (although it wont change the numbers, it just isn't approved). I read in a post a long time back that the cams and intake combo will not change the smog, I would go as far to say that the cams alone probably won't either. I am planning on going to one of those 'don't pass-don't pay' stations when smog comes around....then changing the thermo if the hydrocarbons are too high.

This question is for anyone who has personally installed the H.O. cams:

How long did the swap take and did you have to use the tools that are sold with them?

Did two daks at once back to back.

The first about 6hrs, the second about 4.

What tools? You mean the wedge for the cam chain? Some did it without, ours was made from wood to the same dimensions. Do a search on the subject, plenty of tips and tricks, etc.

Total time removing breaks, beers and such was about 6 hours. I used screw drivers and tie backs instead of the wedge tool. Works well.

There are plenty of instructions available if you do a search for H.O. Cams. Yates-in-de has a website with some pictures that you could print off. Also, Speedtweaks has pretty good instructions that you could print off with all the torque specs. You will need a torque wrench that will adjust from foot pounds to inch pounds. Good luck.

Aaron

lacent,

FWIW, my understanding is that the chain wedge is used to maintain pressure on the tensioners so they don't ratchet down while there's slack in the chain during the install. I know some have done without but I wasn't comfortable with that and used the wedge. Been told the only way to reset the tensioners is to pull the front of the motor off and I didn't want to risk it.

Just my $ .047

Good luck with your install.

Sorry Guys,

My mechanic snatched that wedge from me as soon as the install was done. Said he'd make a template and return it to me. lol, probably never see it again.

Anyway, after seeing it in use, it'd be easy enough to make one out of hardwood(wouldn't want splinters).

My friend Rod made ours when we did two Daks in a row. He made it of wood, and put a leash on it to make retrieval easy.

The photos of one with dimensions have been posted. Sorry, don't have the link.

Check the search engine...awhile back someone had posted the dimensions and a picture of the wedge tool. Thats where I got it for my install. If anyone wants them I have hi-res pictures of my install (includes pictures of my wedge tool). Just e-mail me and I would be happy to shoot them to you. The whole picture package is 8mb, so be ready for a lengthy download if you have a dial-up. Click on the e-mail icon under my screen name.
