Subject: Shift Improvement kit for 4.7l?
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anyone used a shift improvement kit for their automatic transmission? I have seen kits for chevys and fords but what about the dakota. On truckperformance.com, they have a listing of transmissions, for which they sell improvement kits, how can I find out which transmission I have? I am stuck with an automatic because my truck is mainly a work truck, but when I am off of work, its on.

I could be totally wrong here....

But when we put the PCM from my manual trans Dakota into a Dakota with an automatic trans it shifted HARD! If you had it to the floor it would chirp the tires on both the 1-2 and the 2-3 shifts. I had read that the PCM actually retards the timing and shuts down the injectors for the shift to make it smoother. My guess is that no matter what you do to the trans.... it'll still feel smooth and somewhat slushy because of the engine management.

Like I said - I could be wrong, but that's my take on it.

Your vehicle has a 45rfe trans in it and it is controlled by it's own transmission controller and there are no shift kits for this trans.

KENNE BELL HAS AN OPTIMIZER II THAT ADJUST SHIFTS
IP: Logged

Message:
HELLO ALL,

I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE 45RFE (MULTI SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) AND THE 545RFE 5 SPEED AUTO TRANSMISSIONS HAVE A MECHANICAL SHIFT KIT. THEY ARE FE (FULLY ELECTRONIC CONTROLLED TRANSMISSIONS).

AT kennebell.net YOU WILL FIND AN OPTIMIZER II COMPUTER UPGRADE TO YOUR EXISTING ONBOARD ECM THAT ADJUSTS SHIFT QUALITY AND FIRMNESS. I PERSONALLY HAVE A 2002 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE WITH THE 4.7 AND 545RFE IN IT. THE GREAT THING ABOUT THIS TRANSMISSION THAT YEAR IS THAT IT CAME FROM THE FACTORY WITH SYNTHETIC FLUID WHICH HELPS IT SHIFT MORE POSITIVELY-I JUST LOVE THE TRANSMISSION RESPONSE-THE BEST I HAVE EXPERIENCED
IN FACTORY MODE.

THE OPTIMIZER II IS RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE AT AROUND $350.00 PLUS SHIPPING. I AM CURRENTLY IN IRAQ (I AM IN THE ARMY RESERVE) BUT I AM GOING TO
PURCHASE THE OPTIMIZER II ASAP WHEN I RETURN.

I HAVE PURCHASED AN OPTIMZER FOR MY '98 RAM SS/T PICKUP AND HAD GREAT PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY FROM IT. IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THE OPTIMIZER II ALSO HELPS THE 4.7 TO DELIVER MORE POWER AND BETTER MILEAGE WHILE USING PREMIUM FUEL.

I HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS. GO TO THE KENNE BELL WEBSITE AND YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELF.

HAVE A GREAT DAY

There are no shift kits for the 545RFE.

However, you can dramatically improve the shift performance by disabling the torque reduction request circuit.

On a stock 545RFE under wide open throttle and shifting, the TCM sends a request to the PCM to reduce engine power until the shift is complete. Once complete, the PCM resumes 100% engine power. The reduction in engine power is variable but can be up to 30%. This allows the manufacturer to produce a smaller/lighter/more efficient transmission that generates smoother shifts at the cost of performance.

This an be done by cutting the appropriate wire running between the TCM and PCM. If you have a repair manual, this wire is documented in there.

The result is pretty dramatic. Much more aggressive 1-2 and 2-1 shifts and some guys (including me) note more aggressive off the line performance as well.

The 545RFE tranny is also used by the 5.7 Hemi and so removing this circuit from use by the 4.7 seems pretty safe but this is definitely a way to void your warranty.

Note the the 2004 models and some 2003 models have been redesigned to combine the TCM and PCM into a single computer. Hence no wire to cut and so torque reduction cannot be removed from these models.

Jeeper is correct.

I wanted to do the torque management mod to my 2003. It has a 4 plug PCM and NO TCM so it can not be done. On the 2000 to 2002 models yes.

I did it to our 98 Cirrus before we traded it in and mounted a switch next to the shifter. It worked like a charm.

However, the torque management probably extends the life of our tranny's. Now, on old school stuff your engine shifted under full power so a shift kit to the valve body helped to quicken the shifts under full power.

BTW, most people don't think of it, but when you seriously mod a valve body to apply one clutch pack (or band) a lot more aggresive than stock, you need to modify the servo's bleed offs to release faster too! If you don't the one clutch pack that hammers on so fast does so before the other can release causing bind up. Another way to kill a tranny LOL.

I have always had tranny's that barked the ever living sh*t out of the tires. Ford c4's, Mopar 904/727's, Chevy 350 and 700R4's.

But this one should probably be left alone. The tranny's shift pretty good, it's the torque management you feel, NOT a slipping/binding/ or slow shift.

I have a 2001 4.7L and just got the tranny done $3600.00 later and they put a stage 2 kit in it and like you all say no major shift from it.
Had a 1998 5.2L and it shifted like mad , broke tires loss all the time.
Jeeper was talking about cutting a wire from the TCM and PCM. I have a Hayes repair book and can't find the wire he's talking about Help !!!
Ane one know were the wire is ???

It's the one that retards spark timing just a RCH during WOT shifts. If you don't do WOT shifts, it won't affect anything.

Ya I know I just got one installed And it is battleing the TCM and PCM for shifting
The prob is still and firm but not a snappy shift.
Jeeper was saying there is a wire going from TCM to the PCM that controls that and if you cut it , it will solve my prob .. But can't find out where and color ???
