I have a 98 dakota 4x4 ext cab. It seems like the trans shifts very weak and slippery. Is this normal or is the trans in need of service. The fluid is fine, not burnt or black. Anyone have the same weak shifting problem

If I want to drive manual trans I'll take my Vette out for a spin. In my truck the auto works just fine.

My tranny kinda slides into gear when it shifts...not a positive step if you know what I mean. My 2000 has 34000 miles on it. I checked the fluid and it seems ok...What do you think Chris?

i kinda know what you mean .
it goes in but dosent have any grab when she takes the next gear.
how old is the fluid , how long has it been doing this . have you fooled around with the throttle linkage , last engine tune up , have you ever messed with the trans linkage.
before you answer this get up under the truck and check that all the bushings in the linkage on the trans are snug and not wiggling around

If it's just a soft shift , Detroit thinks you like that soft shift so most new auto's do that, all makes most models. Try a Trans-go kit.

first to second shift seems ok, but second to third is the one that is sloppy. I never messed with the TV cable, it appears to be correct from my readings in my service manual. Seems worse when it is cold out. I just bought the truck in Oct. Put some new plugs in last week and it runs fine. Just wasnt too happy about the trans..

then ill assume that the transmission fluid is original
there are two bands that can be adjusted in the transmission.the first band is 1st &reverse, i believe the other is second/ thrid. take it to the dealer ,and have them drop the oil and filter ,and adjust your bands.
you can access one fom the out side but the other requries the removal of the transmission pan .
dont attempt to adjust them yourself if you have never done them before, it is a tediuos procedure.the outside band is such an akward spot that snap on and i think OTC make tool for getting at it

I would like to let everyone know that if they have problems with thier trucks while under warranty and the dealer fails to fix it properly; after the third try you truck could be covered by the lemon laws. I learned the hard way. I made many trips to the dealer to fix a sloppy transmission shift problem while the truck was still under the factory warranty. I was never fixed properly. Now with 65K on the the truck, the sloppy shift has grown to 2nd gear complety gone - slips like hell.
The result - the dealer says it will cost $2500.00 to fix it! What the @#$%^$#! Stick to your guns if you have a problem which is covered under warranty! Call the Chrysler Care number and pinch a fit! Or else....
