Well I think I did my motor in today. A little trip to the local mud hole on base provided a nice thick coat of mud to play in however I got a little stuck and refused to let my Dakota get pulled out. Now she wont idle at all cant shift out in to overdrive and there's a horible valve tap. Whoa.. she runs rough. However I made it out and made it home But now I Find out the damage any suggestions. Check engine light goes nuts also it flashes at me constantly?

Hey, just thought I'd throw in my $.02. I work for a brand X company (not DCX) cough cough Ford. Anyways, my job is to check out the diagnostic systems for the emissions and powertrain controls. So basically your blinking MIL light, if DCX follows the federal guidelines means that you have a severe, possibly damaging misfire-type issue. You mentioned that it won't idle and runs rough. If you try to bring the RPM up to above 2000 RPM, does it seem to smooth out at all? If you're not sure, I wouldn't try it. As far as the noise, it probably isn't valve tap. It is more likely to be detonation (pre-ignition/ spark knock). This can cause major damage, like blowing head gaskets, burning holes in pistons, breaking ring lands, etc. My advice would be to have it towed to the dealer. Tell them that you drove through a deep puddle and you think it might have sucked water into the engine. That will give the dealer a place to start. If I had to bet though, they will probably hook it to a diagnostic machine, try to determine which cylinder is misfiring, check for spark and fuel to that cylinder, and replace either the injector or the coil. Just my ideas, you HAVE to let me know, just for my own curiosity. Good luck.

Following up on what Fast RT6 said: before going to the dealer, CLEAN EVERY TRACE OF MUD OFF YOUR TRUCK, including under the hood. Also, make sure all your electrical connections are clean and totally dry. Take a close look at your air filter and the inside of your air intake tube. If it all looks clean and dry, you probably didn't suck any water into the engine. And don't forget to check the PCV connection on your air intake to make sure it is clean and dry.

I'd start with the PCM or TCM. PCM is on passenger side behind the air filter box, and the TCM is located just behind the passenger side headlight...you might have gotten some dirt, mud, or water into the connectors, which might explain the OD not working and lousy running. Or you may have fried something (mechanically or electronically) when trying to get unstuck...I'm guessing you spent some time spinning wheels (or at least trying to) and maybe some rocking back and forth?

Valve tap...hmmm, maybe, but unlikely if you didn't suck water into your engine. Won't idle and runs rough...again, I'd look for water in any electical connections. I cleaned the underhood area of a saturn one time and got a tiny bit of moisture under a spark plug rubber cover. Car ran LOUSY, and I had to spend a fair amount of time cleaning & drying the cover and connector. Took several tries spread over several hours to get it totally dry and running right.

Good luck.

Flashing MIL light is a signal to shut off the truck. Not supposed to run it or disaster, according to the manual.

Yea - and I'd say if that pic you've got up is any indication, you've probably got water in there somewhere - my bother hit something like that in a mazda he was driving and it sucked up so much water it just straight up chucked a rod out the side of the whole works. I don't mind 'wheelin and mudding, but I am very carefull around deep water about how fast I'm going.

Hey Talsbury, heres a chance for you to help out a fellow 4.7L H.O. wanna-have. How hard was it to install the cam set into your engine? I am looking to pick up the cams and intake from buymopar.com and also the install tools. I was just wondering what kind of pain it is to get to the cams and also how long it took. If you still have a copy of the instructions and could some how email them to me, I would greatly appreciate it. My email is FastRT6Dakota@aol.com. Thank you.

I still havnt done the instal myself on the cam's. I have only seen them done at a dodge dealer. I have done the intake manifold and the throtle body myself and those two are very easy. I sent you the instructions i got form speedtweaks. Let me know if the instructions dont make it to you. Ill resend them.

quadcab check engine light
IP: Logged

Message:
what is the most likely culprit for a steady
check engine light on a 2002 dodge dakota quadcab.
it will be on for days at time then off. seems
to have no punch at lower rpm. also requires more
rpm to get the truck rolling.

thanks

Cycle the ignition key from the "OFF" position to the "RUN" position 3 times and stop in the "RUN" position. Watch the odometer and note the codes that it displays. Then post them here for us.

Ray H, have you checked the vitals? Oil pressure & level, look for unplugged connectors, what's the history of this vehicle? You only have 19K miles on a 1995 vehicle? That's less than 1,800 miles/year, when do you ever drive it? How much of the parts are factory original? Battery, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, O2 sensor? You can go to Autozone and have them scan your truck for codes. You have a pre-'96 so your truck has the older OBD I system most likely. Good luck.
kgerrick, you need to listen to JasonB and check for codes. If your MIL is lit, your truck seems weak because it's in "limp home mode" you need to find the problem before it becomes serious.

Last time I heard what everyone agreed was a valve knock on our dak, it was actually a clogged fuel injector.
