Subject: 5.2L to 5.9L Swap for '92 Dak

Hey guys, you probably saw me posting with questions about building up my 318. I am currently rethinking the project and may just get a used 360 and put that in with some minor mods.

What years will work, I know it has to be '92+, but how new can I go? Can I use a 5.9L from a '92 Dodge FullSize Van? Are ALL '92+ v8s Magnums? What year will be a "direct" swap to my '92 Dak?

I've read through almost every swap thread from this forum. I just want to double check. I'll need a new computer and flywheel. Is there anything else?

Will the typical 318 mods do the same for the 360? Like the M-1 intake? stuff like that..

You will also need a 360 balancer. If the one on the "donor" 360 is missing or shot, you can get a new one from MOPAR for under $100. If the donor 360 was hooked up to an automatic, you'll need to put a new pilot bearing in the crank to hook it up to your 5 speed.

Oops, I meant to say flexplate...not flywheel. When I get the 360, I'll ask for the balancer and the flexplate. If they say it doesn't come with one, I'll say "Do you have one?"

Since the flexplate and the balancer are what balance the crank, can I just get a used one and bolt it on? Is it just the extra weight that helps balance it? Or do I have to get some type of kit and have it balanced? That part confuses me.

B&M Transmission makes a flex plate to adapt a 360 to a 318 torque converter. I think it is part number B&M-10239. Check out the PAW catalog on page 1008. (2001 edition) Good luck...Dan

Ok, yeah I found it on their site. I wonder how much it is...you have any idea?

I don't get it. How does a piece of metal like that balance the whole crank? I just don't understand it ???

The price on the flex plate is $72.95. One plate type has a weight welded on it 4.5" from the center of the crank. This weight is 135 Grams. It equals the amount of weight that could not be put on the crank counterweight because of space limitations. Some plates have a notch taken out of them opposite the counterweight on the crank. This notch equals the 135 Grams needed to balance the engine. The plate only corrects the rear counter weight, the vibration balancer has added weight to correct the front crank counterweight. I spent 22 years of my life at Chrysler engineering in powerplant development. We would put three mallory metal slugs in the front and rear counterweights to internally balance the 360. It's expensive and if you don't make over 500 HP you can just use the adaptor plate. Has to do with crank flex with external weight flying around. Also if you can , use a motor plate. Small block Chryslers bend at the motor mount ears and cause # 2 cylinder to squash the piston. That usually wipes out the rod bearing. This happens because the right side of the motor is pushed down on heavy axcell and bends the block. ( right side as viewed from drivers seat )

I checked out your webb site. You got some cool stuff on your truck. Something you may want to think about, I cut my trans in half when I broke the transfer chain. I know your not supposed to race in four wheel drive, but the wheels don't spin and I beat the guy. $hit happens. Too bad the Ramcharger trans won't work.(drive shaft is on the wrong side) Even if you used the 727 trans with the Dak transfer case you end up with the weak link behind a good trans. Maybe a Jeep trans?
