Subject: Cold Air Intake?

Message:
Who's the moron that thought of installing a pipe with a filter on the end of it under the hood, then calling it COLD AIR INTAKE???

The stock and maybe more restrictive air intake at least got COLD air from in front of the radiator. So now that your air filter on a tube is breathing under the hood, next to the engine and getting HOT air via the radiator, why do they call it COLD AIR intake?
Yeah...it's a lot louder. That's what the ricers want. But what you gained from a less restrictive pipe, you lose with the hotter, less dense air!

If you're going to replace the stock intake tubing, I would think you would at least spend the time to get the air from a COLDER place than under the hoood next to the engine!!!

What do you guys think?

Yup. I like that last picture with the two tubes that lead to the air filter. That IS COLD AIR intake.

And to "yates-in-DE", yes lots of people and stores have what you show in your second picture of your post and try to say it's a COLD AIR INTAKE.

That's my whole point tho. It's obviously NOT! But the ricers, and some of my friends are ricers, try to get me to install those things. If I altered the intake, it is NOT going to get it's air from under the hood next to the engine!

It all comes down to the people who think and those who are willing to believe anything they're told. I call mine an intake knowing that it's not really getting cold air. Mine is just a less restrictive intake than the stock air box. But you have to admit, "Cold air intake" sounds "tight" and "kool." (*curling hand and slapping chest*)

It seems to me that when the truck is moving, at say 20 mph, the air passing through the engine bay (yes, some of it through the radiator where it is warmed a bit) serves as a 20 mph breeze to flush out much of the underhood heat that might otherwise be there building up while parked and idling. That's not to discount the effectiveness of breathing cooler air, but any unnecessary restrictions in the intake/filter system would seem more of a performance hindrance. I'd guess that having both low restriction AND cooler air is best. But if a person could have only one, go with smoothest flow and least restriction.

There is a little flap next to the radiator that you can remove... By doing this air goes right through the grill... not the radiator.. and there ya go... cold air/ram air... i did this with a home brew.. big difference from stock. and here in michigan... we definately got enough cold air

I think I did the same thing as Lee, but I took it a step farther. I romoved the material blocking off the air next to the radiator. Then I fabricated a wide cone squezed it into a 4" diam tube and took it directly into the filterbox. Now I have forced cold air going through a K&N filtercharger stock filter replacement.
