Subject: Best street 4.7 cams?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys, I'm actually a Jeep guy. Came over to see what you all are doing cam wise. I've considered doing the HO cams, but saw KRC makes a set of cams with a little more duration, plus come with matched springs, caps, etc... Has anyone used those cams as a bolt on to an otherwise stock motor with the average bolt ons? How do you like them? They seem to be a decent jump up spec wise from the HO cams... although the HO cams are also much cheaper ;)

Thanks

Really either choice of cams is a good option. I used the Jeep HO Cams and intake b/c there wasn't any other options out there yet. In time I'm sure I'll change to something else (unless I go to a supercharger, where more duration could hurt my engine and/or performance). They are all good gains HP wise, although I have failed to dyno my last three mods (IAT, HO Cams & Intake, TB). With my true duals and racing mufflers, removed third cat, and just a drop in K&N filter in the stock airbox, I dynoed on three consecutive runs at just over 208 RWHP. Not bad considering the mods before that run cost me about $350. The HO Cams & Intake, TB, and home made IAT cost roughly $450-500, and I presume those will also give me a nice showing at the dyno the next time I get off my lazy ass and go.

The HO cams are much easier to install, (don't need springs). As you mentioned are cheaper. Marty hasn't do the dyno the cams as far as I know so we are still waiting to see if they are a worthy swap or not.

So am I to assume nobody's tried the KRC cams yet? Maybe it's time somebody had? ;) Is KRC the only company so far who offers cams for the 4.7? Maybe someone like Comp Cams, Crane, or even Cam Motion would be able to grind something. Or have you all checked into that already?

Hmm... wander if they could do a custom grind. Cam Motion is the best in my opinion (I run a solid roller custom ground .684"/.675", 261/268 duration @ .05, and 111 lsa in my Camaro from them) . I'm sure they'd be able to come up with something perfect for what we're looking for. So maybe I'll give them a call. They're pricing is really good too. I think my cam was 290 bucks. I'll check with them sometime this week...

Their area code might have been changed to 225...

Just a little clarification.... Marty is having those cams dyno'd sometime last week or this week and will be posting results soon. He is the only one who is offering a non-factory cam (the HO cams are from the Grand Cherokee HO) at this point. He is having one of the larger cam manufacturers grind them to his specs. I forget what manufacturer it is (maybe Crane? or Comp Cams) but they are an exclusively custom deal.

The ones that are not advertised on the KRC website are a 218/218 grind that will make huge power, but the powerband itself will pretty much begin at 3800 rpm and you will be shifting gears at 8000 rpm. That means a wild converter and some 4.56 gears and absolute misery on the street. Plus Marty has found out that the oil pump will cavitate above 6000 rpm. Not too good. Now his motor with the 218/218 cams is running an external oil pump ($$$) to keep it alive.

That's good to know about the oil pump...

Any news from KRC as to if they've dyno tested the cams yet? For the price I'm almost inclined to just throw in the HO's for now. But I'll be patient and keep waiting I guess :)

One of my best friends actually has a Z. 1990 twin turbo stage 11. Pretty fast little car :) E-mail me and I can send you pics... chucks97ss@hotmail.com. The RX7 is my brothers. Should be running 12's w/ less than 1500 in mods by the end of this month... The Jeep and SS are mine. The SS is undergoing a new motor build. Shooting for 600+ horse normally aspirated. My dad is currently building a 1950 Chevy 1/2 ton w/ a complete art morrison chassis, air ride, 20" Boyds all the way around, and a brand new LS6 crate motor. That one should be done next summer. It should be a high 13 second truck... but it'll just serve as a show/cruiser.

Anywho :) Come visit any time you're in Nebraska...

I saw the old Chevy on the site, I like it a lot. My question is where did you find that cab and how much work did you put into that? I see a tumb, but the link is broken.

Thank you for the offer, but I never get to Nebraska. I hit CO often and WY and SD on occassion, but I have never gotten to Nebraska. Wonder what's there..

Same offer stands for the Flathead Valley ;)

Chuck,

I'm with your brother on the RX's. I have a '83 first Generation with a '93 twin turbo motor in it, and a '93 twin turbo 3rd Generation like your brothers, except mine is Red. Can't beat them for rice power.
Can't wait for the new RX8's due out in January, they are to cool 50/50 weight ratio, 17" disks, 250 hp natural aspirated 1.3L, 6 speed, 4 DOORS, 4 SEATS.

Yeah, the RX7's and rotory motors are amazing in my opinion... More power per cubic inch than any other production car... And the cars are so light... they handle on rails. Very cool car, he likes it a lot.
If I were to buy a new import sports car right now... My first choice would be a 350Z, my second choice would be an RX8.
