Subject: 5.9 vs 4.7 MPG
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm in the market for a new QC 4x4 Dakota. Was originally thinking of the 4.7 over the 5.9 because of the good power and better gas mileage. Having second thoughts now...I know what the stickers say on the trucks. What are all of you getting mileage wise with either of these engines in 'real world' driving conditions. How about listing this out as engine size average mpg, worst mpg, and best mpg. Thanks.

anyway I would get the 5.9 if I, were you worse milage, but some guy on someother post said 4.7's in initial test runs burnt out around 80,000 miles!!! and should be atleast a litte faster, no to mention more modable. I know the 5.2 was a good engine and the 5.9 is basically the same. the 4.7 is too new. let them work the bugs out of it first, like windows xp.

I got the 21 many times when on vacation in Sept and drove over 4k miles, with ac running and hauling bout 700# of stuff in the bed.
I am happy with the mileage and performance of the 4.7.

As far as which is better, that depends on what you need it for, monster torque and available hop ups get the 5.9L. gas mileage and hi rpm power get the 4.7L

Since when does the 4.7 get a 100,000 mile drive train warranty? I thought all chrysler products were 3 year/36,000 mile except as a recient promotion they were giving free 7/70,000 powertrain warrenties. I don't think you get any argument from Chrysler technitions that the 318/360 motor which has been inuse for over 30 years is more proven reliable then the 4.7 which came out in 1999 and I doubt there are more then a handful of examples with over 100,000 miles. If there are any out there they don't really are not a good yardstick as to get 100,000 miles in 3 years it needs to be long, easy, highway miles.

I travel about 750 miles a week, combination of highway and stop&go traffic (Commute from NH into Mass). I am not easy on the "loud pedal", but I dont leave rubber everwhere I go either...

Anyway, I average 17 mpg consistently over the last 7K miles. It never varies much.

I am planning on adding a Tonneau and 360-airintake in hopes of breaking 20 mpg.

I own a 4.7 Quad Cab, its a 2001, I have 16k miles on it, it runs like a dream. Lots of power , I am happy with it. The Gas milage and performance difference seems marginal to me. The 4.7 is a bit lighter but it pulls really hard. If you are worried about Gas milage, then maybe you should not be looking at V8's. 2 or 3 miles per gallon is not really going to save you much in a years time, look at the over all cost per year. The 4.7 has been used in the Grand Cherokee , its record is short, but thus far, its a winner , at least in my book. Bottom line, if you wanna play, ya gotta pay.

2001 Quad 4.7 4x4.

I've added a throttle-body spacer, air raid filter charger, and had the local muffler shop bump it to a 3" exhaust. I did all of this w/in the first week I had it, so I never checked the mileage "before and after".

I bought the truck (used) in August w/12K, and have been right around 14-15mpg in town. It also seemed to go down when they switched to the 10% stuff we get during the winter. I did get near 20mpg on a 60-65mph trip to Canada (I'm in Spokane,WA). Mine seems sensitive to a heavy foot....probably a couple mpg less when I'm on it regularly. It has this awesome "kick" @ about 20-30mph, when punched, which is hard to resist!

On paper, the 4.7 gives up 10-15 HP and 40-50ft/lbs. torque (from MSN Carpoint Engine info)to the 5.9. The 5.9 is twice the money on the options list and is heavier. But it's proven and can be upgraded more easily than the 4.7, I'd presume.

I have a '02 4.7L CC 5spd 3.92 I have been and will continue doing a lot of highway driving. At 70 or so I can get 18-20 MPG and most of the time I do 85 and only get 15 mpg. I have the tailgate off for now and it really didn't seem to make much of a difference. I think the tall gears really are the problem, but I don't mind them as they are for low end performance. This truck really flies up top in 3rd. Too bad it redlines at about 75, bummer. Its a real good package, but I am a die hard manual shifter. If you are considering an auto I would just get the R/T. I drove a QC 5.9 (auto only) and it was really slow. My CC is a rocket compared to it. Granted it was 4x4 and a little heavier, it still should have had some grunt. They have 5 less HP than the R/T's but big deal, it would not be worth it to me. If you like 5 spd, I would definitely recommend the 4.7L. I love my truck and hate when I am away from it for any period of time. You can accelerate up to speed in 3rd from 20 mph piece of cake. Torque rules.

Keep in mind that the type of driving you do will influence your gas mileage more than anything. How long you idle the vehicle, how much city driving you do, and how much you mash the loud pedal.

I usually drive sanely, but always feel the need to at least squawk the tires several times a day. My 97 Ram CC w/360, auto, and 3.55s on 265/75R16s gets 17 mpg overall on a regular basis. I can top 20 mpg on long trips. My only mod is a K&N filter.

Well, if the previous messages on this board are any indication, I'm about to be called a liar. But I swear it's all true! :) Whatevah...

Well flogged 2K 4.7 RC 4x4 gets 15mpg in mixed driving, 11 mpg pulling a 3000 lb. trailer or using 4WD (including some snow plowing).3.55 rear, automatic. Removing tailgate can cost you some mpg, flat cover on bed should be best (mine's open, gets used as a truck). I heard the same as CW, 97'th percentile user should see 160,000 miles. I think the 6 has to work too hard to move this much weight, factory rates 4.7 milage as better than the 3.9 by 1 mpg. Anyone claiming better milage with the 5.9 probably has freer breathing mods and must be driving like they've got an egg on the loud pedal.
