I noticed that there has been more brake dust on the passenger side front wheel than the driver side. I just changed brake pads and rotors in the front and still have the same problem (36,000 miles). The wheels are the same temperature so I don't think I have a frozen caliper. What's going on? Has anyone else noticed this?

I have bought a 97 4x4 a little while ago with 29,000 and have put appox. 3000 miles on it, I notice more brake dust on my passenger side as well, I haven't taken off the wheels to look at the brakes yet, but I will be doing that in the next couple of weeks, I'll try an keep you posted on what I find. So, don't worry your not alone.

I have noticed on my 97 after changing pads and rotors that the outside pad contacts the rotor more than the inside pad... can anyone else confirm this is the same on theirs? Both driver and passenger sides have the same wear indicating. Is this a problem or designed that way?

Thanks in advance!

At ~65,000 miles, I'm about to put my 3rd set of new front brakes (not including factory original) on my '99 R/T:

@ 26Kmi, originals replaced due to warping rotors (bad pulsation on braking), replaced w/ Power Slot rotors and Stillen metal matrix pads. Noted at that time passenger side outer pad was worn much more than inner pad. Driver side seemed to wear inner/outer pads pretty evenly.

@ 45Kmi, rotors were again badly warped (not at all impressed w/ Powerslots now). Turned original rotors and used them w/ standard pads. Noted LF inner pad badly worn this time, and discovered it was binding on the spindle ears which guide the pads as they "float" on the rotor. Ground the new pad ears to prevent binding on the spindle guides.

@ 65Kmi, found LF outer pad badly worn and grinding LF rotor. RF side also wearing more heavily on outer pad but not as bad. Now calipers on both sides appear bent back, allowing pads to move up and away from spindle guides. Ordered new rotors, pads, caliper bolts, bushings and waiting on parts to arrive.

Seems 20Kmi is too much to expect from a set of front brakes. Original rear brake shoes looks like they still have ~25% left. Yeah, my right foot is on the fat side, but I don't routinely carry heavy loads. Not pleased w/ the durability of these Dakota front brakes.

Warped rotors are usually caused by improperly torquing the wheels.

Ya gotta lubricate the caliper sliders or the calipers will bind causing the pads to wear unevenly.

I've run a set of pads on a Dak for 60k + with no problems.

Well, "improper" torquing the wheels isn't likely the cause. Been cris-crossing and ramping up torque w/ a torque wrench since the '70s. And I avoid letting others work on my wheels without re-checking their work (learned the hard way back in the '80s). I suppose the original rotors could've been damaged by the original owner by the time I bought it w/ 8Kmi and they didn't go whacko for another 18Kmi. And maybe the Powerslots were just junk. But there is no warping on the original rotors at 65K after having them turned at 45K for reuse.

Nor is lubing the sliders the issue. Like I said, my spindle castings seemed to be out of tolerance and were pinching the pads on that set replaced at 45K, no amount of lube would've kept those from binding. I think each time its something different. Warped rotors killed the first (original factory) set, junk Powerslots and pinched pads killed the 2nd. This 3rd set seems to have died from bent guide pins (or something) allowing the calipers to get mis-aligned w/ the rotors and wear the pads unevenly. We'll see how this next set lasts w/ all new hardware. After a trans rebuild 3 yrs ago, heater core replacement a few months ago, I'm stuck w/ this truck for a few more years. Glad I don't put a whole-lot of miles on it.

If the spindle castings were out of tolerance wouldn't it have pinched the pads on the first set of pads?

Possibly, may explain why those rotors warped then and not when reused?? May have also contributed to short life on the first set / Powerslots because I didn't notice pinching when I put those on and could've missed it. Then again, maybe it was the pads put on at 45K that were out of tolerance. Maybe the fact the large majority of my driving is city w/ negligible highway miles contributes to the short life? All I know is the front brakes consistently don't last much past 20Kmi.
