Subject: 4.7L 5spd Shifting Problems! Pls Help!
IP: Logged

Message:
Have been going to Houston Raceway Park with the R/T guys and was hoping to finally get a 14.9 with this temp drop to 65 degrees. Had problems with the shifter all night. Was grinding second or bumping the shift gate going into 3rd. Anyone have this problem?? Truck only has 12,000 miles on it and I have only had these problems happen a few times on the street. I may try swapping out my tranny fluid for AMSOIL 5W-30 Engine Oil. Other than that and maybe a Hurst shifter, I dunno. Thanks for any input.

FYI-- If you use anything OTHER than Mopar Manual Trans fluid-- and you need to have it looked at underwarranty-- it will void it.

The Mopar stuff is a synthetic too, $16.xx a quart (and you'll need either 2.5 or 3.5 quarts, it's been a while since I had my 95 w/NV3500).

I'd bet, with the way you drive (don't bag on me, I saw ya in Houston)... the shifter fork is probably galled, or bend-- I.E.- Go have of it replaced under warranty before it chowders.

That reminds me, I had to have my tranny serviced at 15k miles because the top plate on the tranny had broken loose. Is your shifter really sloppy?

Hum???

My 2000 has 15,000 miles on it, and sometimes the shifter is hard to get out of a gear. ie... going from 3rd to fourth sometimes it sort of sticks almost in 3rd, and I have to apply a good bit of pressure to get it out of gear.

It only happens sometimes....I'm thinking tranny fluid change and a Hurst shifter is in order.

Only problem I ever have is wih reverse. Haven't done a tranny fluid change yet. I've got 39,000 miles on my '00 4.7L 5spd. I'm debating the hurst shifter as well. I'll probably get it just so I can brag about it. Being that I have 3.92's I actually only use 4 out of 5 of my gears. 1st gear is way to low.

I thought 1st was too low with the 3.92's as well, but between learning on the truck and always launching in 2nd i killed my first clutch in only 32,500 miles... I now launch in 1st and with 74k the cluch still feels as good as it did when it was new (factory clutch)... I am hopin got get to this spring on this one at that time I am going to upgrade it... By then I should have close to 100k on the truck.

My clutch is still as good as it ever was. Only time I use 1st is when i'm pulling a trailer. When and if I ever do kill my clutch i'm gonna replace it with a centerforce. As long as you don't by the dual friction they aren't that expensive and they probably last for ever.

Yeah, I am gonna wipe off my racing numbers and take my truck in one day. Can they check the shift fork without pulling the tranny?? I know they will drive it but that won't tell them anything. Only way is to hammer it down and shift hard. I don't know about the 2nd gear grinding, that could just be poor clutch action on my behalf, but the shifter not going into 3rd can definitely be a broken or bent part. I will see what the stealership says. Good thing they can't tell I did HO Cams.
