Subject: 4.7L has over 34,000! Change Plugs?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys,
As you can see from the title my truck has just hit 34,000 miles or so and I read in the owners manual that I should have changed the spark plugs at 30,000 should I change them now or wait? What plugs have you guys run with the best luck? I dont want anything to do with Platinum plugs copper only, are Autolites good or should I stick with Champion? Any opinions will be appreciated! Also what about the manual tranny fluid should I have it changed? Its never been changed, also how bout the rear-end fluid? I changed it at 15,000 think it needs it again? And what about the PCV valve it says to check it in that manual but I dont know where it is or how to check it?
Thank you!
Seth Robbins

Here is what I have done to my 4.7 (74k miles now)....

6k miles, changed plugs, autolite 3923
8k miles, regapped plugs (gaps opened t0 .050" range)
9k miles, changed plugs 3923's
12k miles champion plugs
15k miles Dealer change rear-end fluid for synthetic
28k miles Bosc Platinum plugs
68k miles HO cams
68.5 k miles HO intake, bored 68mm TB, relocate IAT
70k miles: change rear fluid to synth as well as MTL to synthetic (both redline)
74k miles, still runs like a dream.

Each time I swapped or gapped the plugs it made a ncie difference. I am getting ready for anotehr plug change shortly.

Chris
As a note, each time I changed or re-gapped the plugs things started to run smoother.

Didn't touch my plugs until 71K and replaced with Autolits 3293's. Did my thermo and IAT at same time. Noticed a difference right away.

I'd change plugs every 10,000 miles. They are only $8 and not too much of a pain to swap. Not as easy as the other V8's, but I've worked on worse. I put in 3923's with my HO Cams and my idle is really shaky, will alternate between smooth and then the truck will shake. I've been told to switch back to the 5224's. Got them at home and will put them in this week. Chris, did you have any problems with your 3923's and HO Cams? I read somewhere that colder plugs are only necessary with 1 step down per 100hp addition. Who knows.

I never ran the 3923's with the HO cams. Personally I would not run the 3923's in the 4.7 again. I was not that happy with the re-gapping schedule.

I changed my plugs at 26000 and the electrode was half gone. Put the 3923 in and what a diff. Gas went up and runs great. Dont go with Champion. Thats the wourst plug you can go with. Nothing but problems. Bosh is good. Had good things with bosh. Autolight same all good. Ac delco ok. Split fire is garbage. You truck go with what you want.
