Ok, I'm finally thinking about getting off my a$$ and changing my own oil. I have a 2002 4x4 4.7. Is there anything special I need to know about except the pain in the ass the skid plates are? Is everything else pretty straight forward?

Make sure you have an oil filter wrench available as the factory filter on mine was way too tight to loosen with one hand up through the hole in the plastic air shield. I had to reach down from above which was a nightmare. A wrench would have saved me a lot of time and pain, but I didn't have one since I never use a wrench to put the filter on. Everything else was very straight forward.
I found the V-shaped cardboard piece (mentioned previously) very useful for removing the filter without dumping oil all over.
I really liked the fact that I didn't have to jack it up to get under it.

Just tap a little hole at the bottom of the filter, and one a little more than half way up with a small screwdriver and drain the oil out of the filter that way. Then you never spill oil all over the place.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think in my old dakota (99) the oil filter wasn't the classic goes straight it (lay under car and go straight up.) Don't go in to the side (so you have to tilt it)? Or am I thinking of a different car?

Here's a great tip:
Cut the bottom off of a two liter soda bottle (leave the lid on), and slide it up over the filter as you are unscrewing it. It makes it a little harder to unscrew the filter, but you'll catch ever drop of oil (and the filter) in the bottle.
Trust me, you will want to do this :) I tried it once without it on my 2001 QC 4.7 4x4, and oil ran everywhere under the truck and on me.

Ahhh, the 2-liter bottle trick...you can't go wrong with it, it works like a charm.

real men don't mind smelling like oil. That is why you buy speedy dry, as you will still spill some puttin the dirty oil into the empty quarts so you can dispose of it.

For removing filters I like using my 16" challenlocks. Plenty of grip and no hassles. Works better (and cleaner) than the screwdriver trick as well!!!
