Subject: Question for those with headers...
IP: Logged

Message:
My DynoMax Super Turbo system sounded just right until I installed my headers. Now at 70-75 mph (2000-2100 rpm) it's just too loud. I was thinking of replacing my DynoMax muffler with a MagnaFlow, but I don't know for sure if that would solve my problem, and the MagnaFlow mufflers aren't cheap ($90-120 at Jegs). Any help here?

WOW! What rear gears do you have? Looks like 2.92's. Them rpm's are like, realy low for 70-75. I bet your getting 30 mpg.

The exhaust question is beyond me, I don't here so well, so the louder it is the better I like it.

I have the Magnaflow single in/ dual out and Kenne Bell headers w/ 2-1/2" y-pipe, and stock cat. I had the exhaust system installed for a while before the header installation. After installing the headers the exhaust note changed, but it did not get much (if any) louder. The guy at KB said that it would get quite a bit louder, but I guess the Magnaflow does a good job. It is an 18" case muffler. The longer the muffler, the quieter. I love the sound of the truck and wouldn't change it (the sound) for anything. It has a really sweet, deep rumble but is definitely not too loud. The sound carries app. 2-3 blocks, but isn't loud. It's kind of hard to explain. I had a friend drive by me at full throttle (app. 70-80 mph) while I stood on the side of the strip to see how loud it really was. Not obtrusive at all! I can't stand all of the local straight pipe trucks that are so loud you can't hear yourself think, and I don't like the backfiring crap that happens when you let off. My racks off, but it's a very cool sound. Sounds like thunder!!

P.S. I've had the Magnaflow for over 2 years, and it still looks good and have had no problems. Well worth the money. I had a Super Turbo on my '99 5.2L that rusted out in app. 14 months. You get what you pay for.

Sorry. It's a 97 CC Sport 5.2 V-8 auto trans and 3.55 gear. I have mounted larger tires, though (245-70-16), so my effective gear ratio is closer to 3.30. My point was that above 2,000 rpm it suddenly gets real noisy. 70 mph and over gets it in that range; 60 or so does not. I really don't want to go back to a "non-performance" muffler. I've spent quite a bit of time and money improving the performance, though with all I've done, I'm not terribly impressed with the overall results. Mods: Electric fan (no engine-driven fan); Mopar Performance headers and y-pipe; DynoMax Super Turbo Cat-back; MSD 8.5 mm plug wires; 3923 spark plugs; BW cap & rotor; Accel Coil; K&N filter; modified TPS sensor (.65 v). I tried but since removed a Jacobs Pro Street ignition (no improvement at all), K&N FIPK (minimal improvement with major obnoxious noises), and Mopar Performance Computer (minor improvement, but not worth paying an extra 20 cents per gallon for premium).

I think the reason you aren't seeing any big improvements with any of your mods is your 30" tall tires turning that 3.55 into a totally pedestrian 3.23 ratio...... If you'll go back down to a 27.5" or 28" tall tire, you'll see a dramatic performance increase right there. It will also move your cruise rpm (70-75 mph) back up to 2350-2400 rpm. That's what my truck has and the Dynomax is totally quiet. It is actually quite rumbly at 2000-2100 as you are describing, but for my truck (with the 4.7 and a 3.55 rear end) that's only going 60-65 mph. Hardly a problem for me...... if you get my drift.

Guess what I'm saying is, if you change your tires, your current muffler will be just fine.

How's that for an expensive solution??

Thanks, but I just installed (last Friday) a brand new set of Goodyear Fortera tires ($475 from tirerack.com), and I really like the way they look and drive. I guess my next choice is to swap out the 3.55's for 3.92's? Wouldn't mind having a limited slip, too. I think perhaps a different muffler (if possible) would be a lot easier and cheaper, though. Maybe I could just leave the tranny in 3rd :>)

Might as well get the 4.10 rear gears while you are doing the swap. Won't effect the RPMs that much, but will be just that much better for off the line. Do you still have the Jacobs ignition, or did you sell it??
