Ok here is my situation, my wife and I are having a baby late december .. we closed on our first house last month. I have decided to sell my 2001 Yamaha Champ. Edition R1. I figure although I've never wrecked on a bike why invite death especially with a bun in the oven. I decided I want a pickup, something under $12,000 I love the dakotas .. so I'm basically looking at an early Gen 3 with the option to go v8 and CC. In my position which exact truck would you get? .. I've noticed a few different versions of the v8 ..which is the best? .. I need the CC for the baby seat so thats a must. I want something that hauls a$$ and serves as a killer foundation for mods. What do you guys suggest? 4x4 would be nice but does it hamper performace alot? Oh yeah, gas mileage is not an issue b/c I work 5 minutes from my house.

Thanks so much!
-mike

ps: my R1 is still for sale, $9,000 with 2k worth of leather & helmets. The bike alone is worth 10,500 and if you know bikes you know how rare a champ edition R1 is (they only made 1000, only 800 went to the states)

The problem with the CC is that there isn't any back doors so it's not as easy as a ranger or s-10 with the 3rd door deal. but if you can get your kid back there easily go for it, they're great trucks, but I can almost guarantee you that after the first time your wife has to pull the car seat out or has to push the front seat up to get the kid out, your Dakota days will be over and you'll be looking for a 4 door LOL

but the cc only came with a 5.2L (as far as v-8's are concerned)

btw.... Congrats on the house and little one

Thanks man! .. It's coincidence but my wife works for graco so we got hooked up on the new 3-point stroller/carseat/carrier setup. The carseat itself would stay in the truck so I/my wife would just be pulling out nathan (it's a boy) and this seat shell which is designed just to carry around that way you don't have to lug the whole car seat every time. Also, so your saying if I am going cc my only option is the 5.2 for the v8? .. thats cool, at least it's fine tuning my selection, I'm a bit confused with all the models etc. The club cab is the same as the extended cab right? .. just a different name?

thanks!

oh is there a year you would reccomend? .. Budget wise I'm looking at 97-99 .. was there a better than average year for the dakotas or should I just go for the lowest mileage possible?

thanks again,
-m

Club Cabs come now with the 4.7, and you can get an R/T club cab with the 5.9, so you can get any v8 you want in a club cab. I would recommend the 4.7 (replaced the 5.2) but it didn't come out until late 2000.
Club cab is like an extended cab, still 2 doors but extra room behind the rear seat. No one year is better than the other, just get the best you can afford. If you live near San Franciso, I'll sell it to ya :-) I work for Dodge.

I think you should look for some of the Quad Cab Dakota models that maybe someone is selling now. They may be a little bit steeper than your budget, but they ahve four full doors and full shoulder belts in the back seat (for strapping in junior and his assorted stuff). Then consider if your wife will allow you to have a manual trans. If you can find a used Quad Cab 4.7L with a 5-spd, that's going to be closest to your desired truck.

If you can only find an automatic, then so be it. The 4.7 motor is slowly gaining its place in the performance world and there will be plenty of aftermarket goodies coming very soon (in addition to the existing crop of goodies).

Anyhow, if you can't afford it, then go with as recent a 318 5-spd Club Cab as you can find. If not that, then look for a used R/T with the 360 motor and the auto. Lots of aftermarket there, as well.
