i just has the same code. 2001 rc 4.7. i took it to autozone and the put it on a computer for free.
yes for free. the 02 sensor is the last one after the last cat. this is a dealer part. my dealer wanted $101 for this sensor. i just went to the dealer to pick it up and my check engine light did not come on. what the f___. i think i will replace it anyway. i think some other auto parts stores will put your truck on the computer for free as well. good luck

Thank you for the help, I talked to Autozone and gave them the code they said that it was the #2 bank O2 sensor?
I found another posting called MIL LIGHT BLUES that said it was the O2 sensor on the upper right Exhaust? PN 56028586aa is that the one you bought?
I had my battery fail a week ago so my PCM was cleared but the fault came right back

For me it was O2 sensor on pass. side cat. Fixed under warranty at dealership. It's not a big deal and there is a post here for $58.00 sensors for those of you out of warranty. Try removeing and cleaning it and if that doesn't work it's just a simple remove and replace job. Several posts tell how to re-set ck engine light. Also, where are some of you finding four cats? I have a California spec truck with only two.

the o2s are to be covered by the dealer under the federal emission guidelines for 8yrs-80,000miles.(pcm,cat,etc..)

The emissions warranty covers oxygen sensors only in some states. Federal emissions laws do not include them, but some state emissions laws do.

I just tried to get my inspection sticker and failed the OBDII readiness test due to the p0161 code. Paperwork said "O2 Sensor Heater Circuit (Bank2 Sensor 2)". I checked the fuse box at the O2 fuse and looks to be fine. I looked for loose connections under the truck where I thought the O2 sensors where, but I wanted to make sure. When looked at the headers, you follow the pipe away from the engine down to the collector and just past the collector (on each side) there is a small oval shaped piece. I thought that would be the first two catalytic converters. On each one, there are two connectors with wires coming out that I thought would be the O2 sensors. Is all of this information correct???

If so, that means that I had four O2 sensors (2 on each side). After following the exhaust out of each cat, you get to the y-pipe and a couple of feet after the y-pip you get to another larger piece. I what is this piece? It's before you get to the actual muffler. Is that the resonator?

I know I asked a lot of questions, but eventually I want to customize my whole exhaust and I'm learning as much as I can. My final question is what, if anything, can be removed and still pass emissions and be legal with no MIL lights on?

By the way, I have a 2001 4.7, RC, manual, with a basic single in/dual out flowmaster to hold me over until I get the true duals. All other info. is greatly appreciated.

My Dak 2000 4.7 also has 4 O2 sensors. I was having similar problems as you describe. My code was P0133 which refers to the O2 sensor Bank 1/Sensor 1. This is the one above the Cat Converter on the driver side. I think your code refers to the sensor after the Cat Converter on the Pass Side. I found my sensor clogged with soot. Replaced and all is good now.

Hope this helps....

Wow, it's been a while since this post. Anyway, it was pretty straight forward. Just find which one is bad, then unscrew it and unplug it. Plug up the new one and screw it back in. That's the basics, it's actually more too it. I used the Haynes book from Autozone to do it. It has much more detailed instructions, and plus it tells you how to do just about everything else you'll ever want to the engine. Suggest getting it if you plan on doing most of the maintenance yourself. If you have more problems, let me know and I may be able to find the instructions that I used.

I changed the drivers side pre-cat 02 sensor a few years ago on my 2000 4.7 liter. Bought a OEM replacement online for 75.00

Get one with the connector attached so you do not have to do any splicing of wires. If you follow the wires up into the harness you will find an electrical connector.

Also spray the sensor threads down with some penetrating oil and only use the box end 6 point wrench, not open end wrench.

O2 sensor problems

The check engine light recently came on on my 2001 dakota (4.7L). I had the local autoparts store plug into the computer. The Bank 2 Sensor 1 O2 sensor is bad. Which sensor is this (DS or PS)? I am assuming it is the pre cat location. PLease, correct me if I'm wrong.

I just took a look under my '04 and found 4 sensors but it looks like those "cats" are just expantion chambers or premufflers of some sort. I would think that if they were cats they would have some type of heat shield around them due to the amount of heat that cats generate. After my "Y" pipe there is a standard cat with a heat shield. Maybe this is some way of regualting the exhaust temp before it enters the cat to assist in the emissions. Not sure but I hope that I dont have to replace them any time soon they dont look like a fun thing to mess with.

No - those really are cats, called "precats"; not expansion chambers or "premufflers". They perform as cats, that's why the sensors are there. Cats work best when hot, hence their proximity to the cylinders. Up higher than any tall grass you'd be likely to drive over, so no need for heat shields.

I have to get rid of my current P0161, and P0551.

I tried cleaning the connector of the power steering switch, and tried cleaning the O2 sensor. Both codes came back in a few days.

I ordered online thru the parts bin. com

I installed a Bosch O2 sensor to get rid of the P0161 code today. Also replaced the power steering sensor b/c of the P0155 code also.

Apparently, the before and after bosch sensor are the same part number?

I reset the PCM with the removing the (-) cable, turning the key, etc.

At first, for the first time in nearly 10 years I've owned this 4.7 Dak, it ran like crap! It was as if it was starving for gas.

I took it to the gas station, and filled the tank thinking I have been having some issues when the tank gets low. I'm thinking it is a partially clogged internal filter on my internal fuel pump after 10 years.

On the way home, it starts running well again!
I think it was more the PCM relearning, etc.

All seems to be good, and no codes/MIL lights either!
