Okay, the manual says no chains on anything larger than a donut, but really, what tire sizes can acceptably take chains on a stock setup Dak?

2WD, currently 255/60R16s (thinking about 275/60s)

If you go to a larger tire, you have clearance problems as it is. If you add chains now you really do. Not only that the chains would thrash the fenders very much when you turn. Sure they will fit going in a straight line, but not in turns. My advice, see if you can borrow a set of chains after you get a bigger tire. In the grass turn it to full lock and see if you have problems, keep in mind about suspension flex and it dramatically cuts down on clearance.
*This is only advice, so keep it in mind*

I was only planning on chaining up the rears, if I have to chain up all four my dak shouldn't be on the road anyways (a 4wd one might be a different issue)

I have put 235/75/15's on my 2000 R/T for the winter. I also have 500#s of snad bags in the bed. These tires are 1" taller then the factory 17's but should be about the same as the factory 16" 255/60's. Even with the lower ride on an R/T, the taller tires, and a lot of weight in the bed, I can still run link chains on the back if I need to. So far I haven't had to but I bought a set and tried them out just in case (supposed to be 6" new snow overnight!). Tire chain are rarely a problem on RWD cars, just the FWD cars (or 4wd with chains on the front). I never even looked at the manual, so I probably just voided my warranty on my axle or something, oh well. On a side note I was surprised the steel wheel 235/75/15 combo weighs just as much as a stock 17" setup, maybe because the 235's are a truck snow tire with a high load rating.

I hear San Diego is the hotbed for snow chains, especially this time of year.

Well [chuckle] the summer is a LITTLE slow -- but the "season" is starting soon and there are always those of us who like to be prepared in advance.

Are you serious? snowchains in San Diego? Isn't it like 75 degrees year around there? I guess if you head out for the mountains, but whatever.

Have had 5 FEET of snow on local mountain in past seasons, mountain was closed [residents only] cause there was no place for the plows to PUT the snow they plowed = NO parking places for "flatlanders"!
Recent snows have not been SO heavy but one can always hope, besides Big Bear, Mammoth, and Tahoe are destinations attainable IF you are prepared.

I live in Sk, Canada. I travel through the rockies many times with my 2000 Dak 4x4/4.7, Goodyear MTR 31" tires, Mechanical locker in the rear diff and a electric locker up front. that's all you really need to go anywhere you will want to go. Why waste time chaining up, when you can flip a switch, ease off the loud pedal for a split sec. and KEEP ON TRUCKIN.
Knowing HOW to drive in these conditions will get you further than any device on the market, but I like my truck to be so capable that I can push snow over the hood just for fun.
Goto WWW.Detroitlockers.com for more info on diff lockers
