Subject: Torque Not HP
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1999 Dakota sport 4x4 5.2, no mods. I am not looking top end HP, I almost never have the tach up there to use it, plus with a 4x4 I don't think it is a good idea to be going those speeds anyways. I am looking for low end torque. how might this be done? I live in southern California and I would like to keep it Street legal. Are there any torque tricks for the low rpm 4x4 rock crawling Dakotas?

yeah...if money is not an issue a supercharger, on more of a budget a high performance muffler and a k&n fipk should add both torque and horespower

Go to the Links for this site. Go to Crower's site and tell them what you want. I am sure they have just the cam and rockers you need!!!! The best way to increase torque or HP and or shift power band is with different cam! Stay away from crane I have have had two cams from them that had air pockets in them. I also got one that was not properly hardened. Crane trys to weasel out of warranty claims. You might also consider a different set of heads. You can gain 30-50 HP in the heads and 30-50 on the cam and rockers. These numbers are for a computer controlled engine. So you could end up gaining 60-100HP and 50-95 lb Ft of torque. The Mopar PCM or a reflashed one might also help set the paskage of heads, cams and rockers off. You should be able to get these parts with Carb exemption numbers. See if Eddelbroch or AIR makes heads for your engine.

It's not like the 318 is lacking in torque in factory form compared to other midsize or compact trucks. I'd just change the gears to reflect any larger tire size used, and then even go lower for good measure. There are plenty of R/T's out there with good top speed running 4.56 gears on 28 inch tall tires. If you got 31's or 33's then 4.56's will be no problem. You can add the stroker kit for probably less or similar to a supercharger (depending on what work you can do yourself) and the stroker add lots of torque. Most of the other regular mods not only add HP but torque as well, but keep the beer barrel intake as it is the best torque producing manifold ever on a Mopar small block.

Gears and get rid of the crank driven fan and you should be very happy.

Also bump up the timing a few degrees via the crank sensor.

These are the easiest ways to get what you want without major eng. mods and still be very streetable.

I haven't seen any #'s with cam changes but usually very little to gain over the stock cam and still meet all your needs.

Stiffer gears, bumping up the initial timing by relocating the crank sensor, and a 50 mm TB will all add to low-end torue. You should also get an intake kit, such as the K&N FIPK.

If you have not done so already, goinf to a 180 degree t-stat will improve drivabilty, as will relocating the IAT sensor.

jjj's idea regarding replacement of the crank driven fan (with an electric one)will also net an improvement, but, it's more noticable at a higher rpm.

The stock 5.2 cam is actually pretty good, torque-wise.

I noticed a big low end improvement along with some mpg when I got rid of the fan. Maybe mine on my 99 was a little too tight :)

The improvement on the 01 wasn't nearly as great as the 99 but the cluthes work at different temps and the 99 fan is much larger. Still I run only the stock electric on the 01 5.9 and only started to get warm when stuck in non moving traffic in South Beach two weeks ago with the air on. Shut the air off and the temp never went over about 210 still not moving.

The 180 gave me a power loss but I live in PA and it is only hot a few months a year. Also I generally set my stuff up to run best at a little higher temp.

I suggest if you go for heads, don't get anything with bigger ports, they will only lower torque due to the volume slowing down air speed.

I would recommend a new F&B TB or a Supercharger.
You could always replace your cat with a new high flow one, only if it had 30k+. Anything else might increase tq, but your mainly only see the HP at higher RPM'S.
