Growing up in Northern Iowa and Southern Wisconsin, a 2wd truck will work perfectly on dry paved surfaces.

When the roads are snowy and icey a 4wd vehicle can definately make it easier to get around. 4wd makes it easier to get going, but having 4wd doesn't help stop any faster - and sometimes that's the key when driving in snow and ice.

I currently live in Kansas City and have a 4wd - not that I need it. But it does come in handy those 3-5 days a year when the iced streets are covered with snow.

If you like your 2wd, give it a try and see what happens. Are you moving to the plains - like Nebraska - or some area with terrain? If your looking for an excuse to get a 4wd, the 2wd will never work. You better order a new quad cab with all the options tomorrow.

I live in pa. so you would be farther north then me and there are allot of times that i wouldn't want a two wheel drive truck out on the roads. last year the winter wasn't too bad but not sure about conneticut. Then again, a friend of mine has a two wheel drive dakota and he drive roughly 20 miles one way to work everyday. seems to do just fine. he just puts studded tires on and throws a few sandbags in the bed.

IMO 4wd is not necessary as long as you stay on road. I've had two 2wd Daks and get around fine in the winter. I'm in Upstate NY and we get a lot of snow. To do this you will need (1) Anti-Spin rear end, (2) Real snow tires (not M/S or all-season), and (3) 2-3 hundred pounds added weight over axle. I had studded snows on my '95 Dak and now have Bridgestone Winter Dueler DM-Z2 on my "00 4.7. I'd try it first before trading.

In all honesty, if you like what you have - keep it. When the roads are icey, it sucks to drive anything. The good thing is, their's not that many days of the year when the roads are icey.

And if you do end up in an area where you do get alot of snow, you'll end up buying a snowmobile to toy around. That's the only thing I miss about not living in northern Iowa or Wisconsin anymore.
