Subject: Dakota R/T, need higher tow capacity
IP: Logged

Message:
I've been thinking of picking up a used R/T for awhile now becuase it's the perfect blend of sport and utility. BUT...

The reason I'm buying a truck at all is to tow a 2400lb race car and 600-700lb trailer around to races.

I know originally the R/T had a high (6000lb) capacity, but there was some recall and they knocked it down to 2000lbs.

Is there any aftermarket parts (HD leafs, shocks, etc) to get the R/T safe for 3200lb towing?

Thanks for the help guys, I dig the R/T.

Try the Roadmaster Active Suspension Kit. The R/T is setup for about 2k towing safely(Don't quote me). Another 1k should be got from the Kit(Don't quote me here either, contact RAS for more details).

Naturally your brake setup will have something to do with this as well...but I am currently not concerned. Will be another year before I get my Harley/Boat. Right now I find it most helpful for the HomeDepot trips and of course, the advertised benifits of the Kit.

Oops...forgot to mention that you may want to look into a different Tire Selection

2,000? Wasn't aware of that.

My 01 QC 4.7 5spd, with trailer towing and HD service group, not only hauls ass, but comes factory with a nearly 7,000 lb rating.

The R/T's do look pretty good though.

The RT was originally rated at 6700#... they dropped all RTs to 2000# rating due to the lower suspension (a bunch of BS if you asked me).

If the RT has the HD service group (electrical, cooling, etc.)... And you want to tow a load like that-- get a class III hitch-- get a set of air bags (over loaders) for the rear... and run eletric brakes on your trailer-- anything over 2000# reguires trailer brakes anyway.

The bags will help with rear end sagging (though with a 3500# load, that's a 350# tonque weight-- not an issue). A lot of people still tow with their RTs... The tires/rims aren't an issue-- if you were carrying a lot of weight in the bed, then you might need to rethink the tires-- towing 4000# of stuff won't be an issue.

I towed a 3500# bass boat with my wife's RT, 99 CC SY (gone now)... The truck pulled it with no effort.

Guys, thanks for all your replys. I'm thinking it'll do it with the few modifications that you suggested.

I'm not too familiar with trucks, so what are airbags (overloaders), what do they do, how do they install, etc.

Also, is there a way to tell if a truck I'm looking at has the HD group with it?

Thanks a ton!
