Cool!

Um... not to sound pushy, but could you check your Caps Lock next time? I really hate to sound mocking, but all caps makes you look like either a 9 year old script-kiddie or an AOLer.

Not that -all- AOLers are bad... just a good portion of the stupid ones ;)

CC,

You might want to check out the post:
5-speed Swap by ron on 8/21/2002 15:58:32 in the performance forum. It has alot of crazy ideas about possible routes to take when it comes to manual trans up-grades.

ya power hungry but the 5 speed won't hold up against all of the torque the 5.9L can and will put out like the viper 6 speed will handle. Sorry about the caps lock all but i had spent all night dancing and arrived around 9 am today.

That post talks about all different types of trans. A nv4500 is a 5spd that is alot stronger than the 3500. It is the 5spd that came in 1 ton rams behind the diesel and v10. It has an extremely low 1st gear of 5.61, but weighs about 100lbs more than a 3500.

Keisler makes modified tremec 5spd for mopars in stages from 375hp, 475hp and 650hp ratings. The trans kits are actually designed for old muscle cars but they are making a kit to work in a dakota due out in the fall 02'.

They also offer the t-56 6spd. They talk about the how much more work it is to install, plus it costs alot more. Thier t-56 trans are geared alot better than a junkyard viper's. They say that a lot of the people that do a stock t-56 swap say that the 6spd is useless because it's so tall.

The web site for keisler is www.keislerauto.com

In this post a dakota owner Talks about what he found about the nv4500 5spd:
www.dakota-truck.net/faq/Transmission_and_Gears/5_speed_swap.html

Another option if you don't mind the added weight or if your a four wheeler is the nv5600 6spd form the ram. It is geared better than the t-56 for off roading as seen by thier ratio comparison:

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th
Trans Gear Gear Gear Gear Gear Gear
Model Ratio Ratio Ratio Ratio Ratio Ratio
NV5600 5.63 3.38 2.04 1.39 1.00 0.73
T56 2.66 1.78 1.30 1.00 0.74 0.50

These specs and the specs on all 97-02 Chrysler transmission gearing can be found on:
http://www.vibratesoftware.com/html_help/html/chrysler/chrysler_transmissions.htm

Another site lists domestic truck manual trans and tells differences between them and what they came in is:

www.motivegear.com on the tech page

It covers 4spd used in the 80's to the new 6spd used in chassis cabs with 23,000 GVW's.

I have other sites that sell these trans rebuilt, if you want them let me know. They might give you a price persective and who know maybe your next mod!

My goal is to get a 6-speed into my truck before too very long. Even so - I think most people underestimate the NV3500 trans pretty badly. I've been making upwards of 400hp and 500ft-lbs of torque for the last year with my truck - and no problems with it so far. I think the NV3500 would probably hold up pretty well behind a stock 5.9 in a Dakota..... but everyone must understand that ANYTHING can be broken!

And yes, I think Duner is right about nv -3500.
The new HEMI is supposed to bolt right up to the nv-3500 so I wonder.......

The New Venture trannies have a warrenty on them from them to Chrysler I believe, so they want to be sure they aint going to fail!

Duner, that's good info that your NV3500 is holding up to that kind of power. I'm contemplating putting a mild 408 stroker in a 95 5 speed truck that currently has a 318. The motor will probably be in the 380-400 hp range and 460-500 tq. The tranny has about 91K on it so I was going to have it completely rebuilt first - just to bulk it up.

What kind of clutch are you running?

Went with Centerforce II Clutch
IP: Logged

Message:
Until yesterday I was running the original stock OEM clutch. It held up pretty well considering the nearly 300 timeslips I got from the truck already and also towing a car trailer with another dakota on it occasionally. The last pass down the track with the stock clutch netted a 12.55 @ 108.82mph with the clutch slipping most of the way. I knew then that the stock clutch had done all it was gonna do. Man that burned clutch smell is NASTY!

Yesterday I installed a Centerforce II clutch. Hopefully it will hold up to the power I'm generating lately. I opted to go for that one instead of the dual friction model. I drive the truck in stop and go traffic quite a bit and don't really like a "grabby" clutch. We'll find out in a couple of weeks how much the slipping clutch was costing me on the track.

There is a way around it (6-speed conversion) and it involves the Viper 6-Speed and the bell housing out of the V-10 Ram's. The rest is a custom PCM flash and some driveline modifications...but that's all I've got on the subject for now. (Working on the details and trying to pry information out of a few other people.)

Duner,

Always like your insight.

Are you using the stock shifter?

Hell, just playing around and shifting fast in my 01 QC 4.7 5spd, 3rd gear is a bitch on fast shifts, misses alot. This ain't my first manual either, won't be the last either. Never had this prob with other manuals, not even the wifes Mazda Protege.

Thanks Todd.

Yeah, still using the stock shifter. I pretty much granny shift this thing to make sure I don't miss any gears or bend any shift forks. I know that shifting quicker would probably improve my ET slightly, but until I have another transmission ready to go.... I'm not going to push my luck.

I have seen rebuilt t-56 trans for $1850. You would need a new drive shaft, probably a new trans cross member/mount, flashed or new pcm, possibly need your wiring modified( different senors). Good idea to get an aftermarket bellhousing $$$. Will cost $2800+ depending on labor.
