Subject: Parts list for head work?

Message:
If you were going to remove and re-install the heads on a 4.7, would you need any parts other than the head, valve cover, and intake manifold gaskets? I've been told by enough people I trust that I should have new head bolts too, so I'll probly get those. Should I need anything else (other than a good set of torque wrenches) to get this done right? Does anyone have any suggestions as far as gasket type/brand, etc?

There aren't any valve cover or intake manifold gaskets for the 4.7L. They are molded in and are re-usable. I bought a set of PCV valves since they are cheap and break easy when you try to remove them. You probably want to pick up some exhaust manifold gaskets too. The factory manual states it's ok to reuse the head bolts as long as there is no thread stretch.

When you get the head gaskets, get the Multilayer Steel (MLS). Mopar Magazine tech tips recommend coating the head gaskets with Mopar aerosol gasket sealant or equivalent. The factory manual also states to only use chemical gasket removers or a plastic scraper to remove the old gasket material. The old 3M kit you put on your die grinder will remove to much material off of the aluminum and ruin the gasket surface.

I hope this helps.

Nice tips Muzzy, thanks. The reason I think I'm going to go with the new head bolts anyhow is because I know two different mechanics (both whom I trust and consider good mechanics) who have recommended new head bolts. Where abouts do you find the MLS gaskets? The only place I've found any parts so far is at dealerships, and as you might expect, the price is up there.

The MLS head gaskets are a Mopar part that you get from the dealer. They offered 2 types for the 4.7L when I got mine. The cheaper ones are made of a graphite composite. The MLS (premium) head gaskets were about $48 each.
