I bought a 2001 Q/C 4.7 and everyone keeps asking me or telling me that its a gas guzzler. No kidding, what did they think, maybe I would be getting 4cyl. mileage from a V8? Anyway I like the truck and from what I remember reading, the V6 gets a little better mileage than the V8 4.7.

Actually I am getting the best mileage I have ever got from a 4X4.I have had chev and ford and the best I ever got before was 20mpg (canadian gal) and that is 100 kph(60 mph) and no hard accelleration.I am getting 23.82mpg with this 4.7, the sticker on the window said 24 mpg so it was not far off.Keep in mind there was absolutely no lead foot used during mileage checks and all hwy miles.

Swampdak,

Is that 23.82mpg on your 4.7l using canadian or
imperial gallon measurement ?
1 Imperial Gallon = 1.2 U.S. Gallons
Converting 23.82 w/imperial gallons comes out to
19.85 mpg with U.S. Gallons.

I have a 4.7l 5-Spd, and was getting approx.
15.5 mpg mixed driving. I recently replaced my
rear differential lube with Mobil-1 75W-90
and added a tube of friction modifier.
My mileage on the last 1 1/2 tanks has been
16.9 on the same mixed driving.

I am planning to replace the 5-spd lube with Mobil-1 75W-90 this weekend to try to improve mileage more, and to reduce wear in the transmission.

Hey, how do I figure out what kind of mileage I'm getting. Example if I'm getting 650km out of 90 liters of gas what is the mileage. Could someone give me the formula, I guess I'm mathamatically illiterate.

I just got my 2002 QC Sport 4.7 5spd 3.92diff

on my first couple of tanks of gas I got about 13 MPG in mixed driving.

I then did some modifications:

Jett stage II Chip
Gibson cat back exaust
Volant intake system
all of which tout better gas milage)

I also put 32x11.5 BFG MT's on the truck
(which should hurt the milage)

Anyway after all is said and done I am getting 12MPG in mixed driving.

650km / 90liters = 7.22 Km/Liter
However, my overhead console says that in metric,
they track #liters per 100km.

That would calculate out as:
90 liters / 6.5(100km) = 13.84 l / 100km

This roughly equates to:
17 mpg (U.S. measurements)

Peter, adding 32 x 11.50 MT's to your truck is probably your problem. AT's probably wouldn't have hurt it that much. Adding mud tires to any truck is probably going to hurt the milage. As for having 3.92's...my milage has ben pretty decent. I average about 17-18 mixed. My worst has been 15 and my best has been 20. I have a 4.7l 4x2 CC. After I add a few air flow upgrades it should improve some.

Cthomp,

I didn't realise that the MT's would effect the
milage. I still would have chosen the MT's because
of the snow and off road benefits. The AT's just
pack with mud and Hydroplane in snowy and rainy
conditions.

I also failed to mention that my truck is a 4X4.
It still gets better milage than my wife's 5.9

It really doesn't seem like it would but every time either myself or friends have used MT's milage takes a hit. Just the larger diameter of the tire is going to effect milage. Larger tries mean more surface area to cover. Meaning more work for the engine. I pretty sure thats how it goes.

I agree with the bigger tire equals worse milage
scenario. I bet my trip computer and odometer is
off because of the increased circumfrence of the

4.7 is actually rated a little better than 3.9 for milage. AT's bad in snow ? I've been running B.F.Goodrich All Terraian TA's in winter to plow for many years - terrific traction - wouldn't dream of running anything else. Just don't go too wide for a winter tire. 235-75R15 is perfect. no complaints about milage here either.

I have yet to get better than 10 m.p.g.
All my drving has been city. I don't have a heavy foot!!! The dealer says the thing checks out ok. They say m.p.g. should get better. When?
I am not a happy owner. The sticker display stated 13 city and 18 highway. I would be happy with that. Any thoughts?

Hey Joe....just a thought, since the pcm makes adjustments for driving conditions, maybe the poor mileage is due to an occassional heavy foot. You could try to clear it by removing the batt cable and turning on your ignition for 15 secs. Then the computer will "relearn". This is also done when mods are made so the computer will compensate for more fuel, air, gearing etc. If the pcm can relearn by itself in about 200 miles. I have a 2000 CC 4.7 and put about 2000 miles a month on it. My overhead console shows average on combined milage at about 15 mpg.

I don't own a Dakota just yet, but I'm working on getting a 4.7L V8, b/c after having test drove one, the power was phenomenol. As long as I can get around 15-17 mpg, I could care less. I own an '86 Bronco II that gets 19-20 mpg on a REALLY good day, and averages about 14-16 mpg. I was wondering once I got my Dakota, I was thinking about adding a new air intake, and probably putting a new computer chip in to supe it up. What brand intake or chips should I use and will it increase or decrease the gas mileage? I know it boosts the HP, but I was wondering what else it did. Thanks

well, I just got an '03 QC 4.7 and have 3500 miles on it. I have a 5spd auto.

I have kept very good track of my milage using 89 octane in the beginning and 87 towards the end

My worst gas milage is 15.9, and that was in the hard rain against the wind on the highway at 80mph usng 89 octane.

My best is running highway at 65 with the wind using 87 octane getting 20.2 mpg

My average is 17.3 Running mostly backroads 40 miles per day to work.

I noticed an improvement of about .5 mpg with the 3923 autolights, and about 2 mpg with a bed cover.

I'd also seems that when I drive it harder it really doesnt harm the gas milage to bad as long as I don't do it ALL the time.

Hope this helps
