Okay, it's happened twice now. I have 2002 4.7 liter automatic and right after startup it doesn't shift and it feels like it started in and get's stuck in second gear because its sluggish and sounds like its being overworked, after about a minute (maybe less) it shifts and works fine, what's the deal?

Sounds to me like what my tranny does when I first take off on the morning, have to fight to make it hit OD, which is normal for 91 automatics

i have the same problem you have and the same truck { mines 3.9L V6 } but when i leave my truck off over-night it does it.

i think it has to to w/ the trany fuild being cold and not letting the gears shift properly

But don't quote me on that. I've brought it to my dealer many time about it and they tell me it normal...well i guess the ext 7yr/100K warranty i bought will come in handy when the tranny falls out......

Sorry for thw long post but just wanted to let you know your not the only one.

That overworked sound you here along with the drag on the engine might be the fan. Mine does this every morning for a few blocks. Scared the $hit out of me the first morning!

I also seem to remember seeing in the owners manual something about the tranny not shifting to overdrive until it warms up.

The very first time you drive the truck in the morning it will sound and feel like there is no power but it is just all the noise from the clutch fan. I bet after a couple minutes everything is fine. Just stop and take off again to see the difference.
