alright ive had this problem in the past.. when i go from reverse to drive sometimes the idle drops real low or it stalls ... it has done this numerous times in the past .. but i thought it mighta been fixed when my mechanic cleaned out my trottle body...(he said it was real dirty) ...after that it didnt do it for about 2 weeks..but it just happend again tonight.. im pissed off... and i have no idea what it could be.. help!!! please!!! sorry for the long post

You might hate me for telling you this, but when I had that problom it turned out to be a cracked valvebody. The trans fluid would flow in and lock up the converter from reverse to forward. It could also be the solinoid on the back of the TB that controls the idle speed. Sometimes when they get old, they get slow.

opps sorry Demon Dakota i didnt included that info... its a 98 5.2 automatic and im not real sure what the name for the tranny is.. its just the regular stock one..DaveR what all happens with a cracked valvebody and how much is it to fix it?? thanks

mine did it 2 days ago, I have it lowered, so I
have to do multiple shifts from reverse into
drive just to fit into a spot, but for some
reason, the idle went down to just under 500,
and went dead? mine is a 2001 4.7 auto.

Clean out the throttle body very good and reset the computer.

exactly what is the idle suppose to be for a 2001 4.7 auto because lately its been at 500 even and that seems low or is it just me.

600 rpms idle. with dino oil, mine idles at 625 on Mobil1 15w50.

They all idle the same just the tachs are a little different. The only way to accurately see what it is idling at is to take a scanner and see what the idle is and what the target idle is.

wow mine idles at 950 rpm. it always chirps the tires when i put it in gear and i go through brakes like mad. I thought this was just normal.

I pulled off my TB this last weekend, cleaned
it, took off the TB spacer ( made a real cool
sound when hit the wall) put stock airhat back
on, no more 500 RPM idle, and no more
stalling.

91 Dakota, 3.9 V6, 5 speed 4X4. It cranks normal but sometimes it won't start. The accesory relay on the fuse box was very hot and rattled. I replaced it any the problem went away. Four days later the problem returned. Problem is intermittent and will always start after trying from four to 10 times for now. If not fixed Iam sure one day it will not start. Help
