ask around there should be a shop around where you live that performs air conditioner cleaning. That smell is a type of mold that grows. There is a company called B.G they make products to do this

Been lots of posts on this.

Even took mine to the dealer for it.

Make sure the drain tube in the firewall is draining condensation, or clean it out. If you can hear or see the water dripping when you stop, then it's probably OK.

I tip a dealer told me, and believe it or not WORKS. Don't use the A/C on MAX A/C. If you do, only at start-up to cool it off, then switch to reg A/C. Apparently, this vents differently and keeps the algae and mold from propagating. I thought it was BS too, but since I've done it, no more foul smell. Try it for a while, you'll have to get it clear first, or you won't notice a difference for awhile.

Good luck, it works for me.

It's a shame that after having all kinds of trucks and cars since 1971 that you have to do this with a brand new vehicle. I never had any problem living in Florida leaving the A/C on max air all the time until Dakota.
When you have it on regular cooling it pulls in some outside air and mixes with the cold air I assume.
I also read to leave the blower on a few minutes after turning off the A/C.

It isn't just the Dakota. I had a 1995 Mustang that would have that same nasty foot locker smell. I let the dealer take care of it the first time and then they suggested spraying Lysol down the outside defroster vents. This seemed to work. Nothing worse than the interior of your car/truck smelling like ass.

I recently developed a foul smell coming from my vents on a 96 Dodge stratus. It smelled like a combination of bad cheese and feet. After a few minutes it would go away (or I would get used to it). All the research I did pointed to mold/mildew in the evaporator box due to a plugged drain hose. I did the spray will lysol all of that turn the fan off before you stop business (What good is an aircondition that you can only run part of the time?) Well as it turns out that was only part of the problem...Upon disassembly is was discovered that the foam insulation had melted and in some places was charred. -Take a foam coffee cup and set in on fire that is the toxic junk you are smelling in your car- It was a cheap piece of bead foam that disintegrated and plugged the drain pipe, but the smell was definitely from the burnt foam. It came out in several large chunks and millions of specks. This had been a frustrating problem - even the dealer couldn't figure it out minus $100. The solution basically is to disassemble the evaporator box clean out all of that foam and make sure the drain plug is free and clear of debris. I wouldn't be surprised if this couldn't be recall/hidden warranty work??
note PT cruiser are built on the Stratus/Cirrus bodies so this may or may not pertain to them.
good luck
It took a very good mechanic friend of mine about 20 minutes to diagnose and about an about two hours cleaning and reassembling - not an easy job but well worth it.
The manufacturer "couldn't do anything until enough people complained"?! how dumb is that?

Good info but one correction. The PT is built on the Neon platform, hence the "P".

Yeah, PT Cruisers are notorious for this. And even my '93 Acura NSX has this problem! That's why I'm on this page--Google led me here. Thanks for the tips, everyone.

I have a 02 Dodge Caravan that has had this problem since it was new. The dealer has tried to repair it 5 times with no luck. Chrysler is of no help and they state that with every attempt at fixing the problem that my car is the exception and not the norm. Are there any groups that are trying to make Chrysler accountable for this design flaw?

This is a problem with all makes and models, not just Dodge. There is a product call Fridgi Fresh that works great. I used it on my 300M which stunk like sh1t until the air got cold. A trick I used was to turn the A/C off but leave the fan on high for the last 3-4 minutes of your trip. Helps dry out the evaporator box which is what smells.

Also, the drain tube is not the cause, it is the design of the evaporator case along with the materials used tht help promote mold/mildew. If it was the drain tube, you would be seeing water on yoru truck floow since it has nowhere to drain except inside the truck.
