I'm just a big idiot, but I have to ask this cause nobody has ever explained it to me. How does a supercharger actually work? I think I sort of has an idea but not for sure. Anybody nice enough to let me know would be greatly apreciated.

A supercharger (or a turbocharger) is a kind of air compressor that compresses your intake air to a pressure greater than atmospheric. You can think of it as forcing more air into your combustion chamber. The higher the pressure in the chamber is, the more work it is going to do on your piston during the power stroke. The highest pressure attainable in the intake manifold of a non-supercharged engine is a little less than the surrounding atmospheric pressure (if it were any higher than atmospheric, it wouldn't go in the engine). A supercharger will compress the air to a level above atmospheric pressure. The amount above atmospheric is called 'boost' and is adjustable. For example a supercharger running 10 lbs of boost is raising the pressure in the intake manifold 10 psi above atmospheric pressure. Turbochargers do pretty much the same thing but are driven by exhaust gases rather than an engine driven belt.
The key to the extra power is the raising of the average pressure of the intake charge at the time of ignition.
