Subject: 2001 Full Time AWD 5.9L HELP-Any Ideas?
IP: Logged

Message:
We have had our truck at the dealer for repair so many times we have lost count.
Is anyone else having problems with a FULL TIME ALL WHEEL DRIVE MODEL?

Our model is the 2001 FULL TIME AWD
Elect. Shift On The Fly,
Antispin Difs with 3.92 gears,
5.9L Magnum SMPI V8,
Automatic with overdrive,
ABS Front & Rear,
Heavy Duty Engine oil cooler,
Auxiliary Transmission oil cooler,
136 AMP Alternator with a 750AMp Battery,
Tow Package,
and all the other misc. add on's to the inside.

All our problems are listed below.

THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN REPAIRED:
Oil pump replaced,
Engine replaced at 9,600 miles,
Front Diff Replaced,
Wiper Motor Replaced,
Interior plastic console button replaced,
Transfer Case Recall 975,
Seatbelt Recall - Anchor stop,
Transfer Case Update,
Recall #989,
Flashed transmission shift computer twice,
Transfer Case wouldn’t shift into natural tow mode,
Exhaust manifold leaking after engine was replaced- replaced manifold,
Coolant leak from thermostat housing after engine was replaced,
Dealer Damaged Driver Door while in shop - they repainted the door,
Could still see damage - repainted door a second time,
Power steering fluid leaking at the rack,

STILL NOT YET REPAIRED:
Engine makes loud lifter ticking noise when accel
AC not keeping a constant temp while driving,
Power steering makes a popping/clicking when turning right or on a bumpy road,
Front tires feathering,
Clunking in the drive train when accel and decel- They say it is normal?

This truck is no longer AVL. They stopped making it with the Full Time AWD. They won't replace it for us or buy it back - We have met with the area dodge rep and she refuses to help us. So Now What?
ANY IDEAS?????? It has been at the dealer on and off for about 40days now - and still needs items addressed. It now has 24,000 miles on it....

Sounds like you got a lemon. Sometimes you just get a bad one.

First off, I have a 2001 4.7L 3.92 with all the trimmings, just like your, just one engine size down. ....

Anyhow,... I have had no problems at 14,000 miles, I do get the occasional clunk when decel'ing, but not on accel'ing. I get a moderate lifter ticker noise when it's warm out, but not to bad.

Other than that it's worked great.

I would suggestion you contact the 'BBB' in your area and have the dealership checked out.

I would seriously consider the Lemon Act, and might sue the dealership to boot. You've gotten the shaft. Get an attorney involved, and you'll see how nice and helpful a dealership can really be.

You sure it's not still the manifold leaking?? I knw header leaks can be mistaken for lifter ticking. Also, try holding the fuel injectors and see if they are in time with the ticking. I know my injectors on my 5.9 are pretty noisy

-AC not keeping a constant temp while driving,

Not sure I fully understand this. Does it do this when at a steady cruise speed, or when accelerating, or slightly after accelerating?? The PCM turns off the AC compressor under WOT.

-Power steering makes a popping/clicking when
-turning right or on a bumpy road,

There is a TSB for this. At least there was on the -98-00 models

-Front tires feathering,

Try taking it to a good alignment shop and see if they can fix it. From what I've hear about DOdge dealers and alignments, it seems they can never get them right

-Clunking in the drive train when accel and
-decel- They say it is normal?

This sounds normal with the limited slip differential. It is the axles locking and unlocking. All the R/T's I've seen make this sound. Mine really does with the PowerTrax in it.

Overall, it sounds like you have a lemon. I woudl definitly check into the lemon laws for your area even though it seems like most of the problems are coverd by TSB's or recalls. Or the daler incopetence as far as the door damage and leaking t-stathousing(which was a TSB for '98-'99 R/T's) I woudl say the oil pump needing replaced shortened the engine life and that's why the engine got replaced at 9600 miles.
