Leave the pre-Cats and remove the big one. You can remove the 2 pre-Cats, but you will get a rough idel and an engine light. There is a fix for this at:

KRC Performance

It's called the KAT BOX, but I still have both pre-Cats and it runs great.

yates-in-DE,

So are you saying that you just simply removed the 3rd cat? Just cut it off? That's it and no code being thrown or no rough idle?

Aaron

Aaron,

Thats about it, I took a torch to mine in the begining and cut it off behind the hanger about 2 1/2 inches, right in front of the CAT. And then cut it right at the back of the CAT, leaving about 2 1/2 inches of straight pipe for the replacement pipe, that I cut and flared on both ends and clamp/welded in. I saved the old CAT and use it to replace the pipe on return trip to USA in a couple months.

TOTAL LABOR TIME: 35 MINUTES
TOTAL COST:
1 lift at the hoby shop for 1 HOUR $1.50 and
1 piece 2 1/2" PIPE 2' long FREE from the local exhaust shop.
2 ea. 2 1/2" CLAMPS @ $1.25 ea. $2.50
= $4.00

GAINS: about 8 HP

Cheapest HP I've boltet on yet.

Have Fun,

Lynn,

I'm in Canada and I don't think I want to actually cut the cat right off, emissions laws and all... and I don't imagine I could find a shop that would simply cut it off anyhow... I'm sure I could talk someone into blowing it out though... All you'd have to do is break up all the junk inside it and blow it out, correct? Wouldn't that give the same gains as just cutting it off? There'd be no restriction there and it would look like the cat was still working correctly, new truck and all... heh...

Aaron

Selcher,

I've never just broke them out, I believe that there is still a back pressure with them broken out. I've seen a friend of mine that ownes a muffler shop in Louisiana put a straight pipe through them. It works like it is not there at all.
That requires taking it off breaking out the catalyst and welding a piece of straight pipe in side. Thats a lot of work, but it will do the trick. (great camoflauge) I'm not sure about muffler shops where you are though.
Back in the STATES my friend does all my exhaust work for me, here in Germany I do most of it myself. I have a shop that done my 3" set up, but wouldn't take out the CAT. I had to go to the AirForce Hobby shop and do that myself.

Lynn,

I think I will check into buying a new Dynomax muffler for the truck and see if the manager will do what you said about putting a straight pipe through the CAT. Great way to hide it from the emission police, not that there are any here but just in case I take it back (GOD FORBID) to the dealership for warranty work. Do you know anything about Dynomax mufflers? I'll start a new post about it. Thanks Lynn!

Aaron

Aaron,

Don't know about DynoMax, but I do know about Flowmasters. There OK and sure beat spendin' $350 American on a Gibson or a Borla System.

The Flowmaster 50 Series works great for mine.

Removing third cat still doesn't void the warranty as it has NO EFFECT ON THE OPERATIONS OF THE ENGINE OR TRANSMISSION! Only used for pollution control. Now, you might violate local pollution laws, but it absolutely does not void the factory warranty, even if the grease monkey idiots (no offense to any here on the site) try to tell you otherwise.

If you remove the 3rd cat completly and leave the 2 pre cats can you still pass emissions? How about if you us a high flow 3rd cat, would this pass or fail emissions? Thanks

I'd love to remove my precats (and my main cat). The only reason i havent done my main cat is i havent really taken the time to plan it out and stuff. Does anyone know if the y-pipe from the early 2000's (before the precats) will fit on a 2001+ with precats? I dont think anyone makes and aftermarket y-pipe to replace the precats, i could be wrong, but i havent found one yet. The only thing holding me back from takin the precats off is the y-pipe. I dont think i'll be able to find a shop around here that will take my cats out for me. We dont have any emissions testing here in Idaho, so that wont be a problem tho. This weekend or something, i really need to get under my truck and plan my attack of the main cat...
