I just did a little tune up with my Dodge Van. It's a 96 3500 Dodge Ram Van Maxi 5.9L. I had checked the oil and noticed that it was almost 3 quarts low! So I decided to change the oil. Then I remembered that the spark plugs had not been changed for a while so I changed those. . Now when I rev the engine , I get blue smoke out of the tail pipe(especially when the engine is cold). It seems to go away when I drive it when the engine is warm. It seems to run fine. But I notice that if the gas pedal is held in one place the engine seems to change RPM's. Any clue as to why this would happen?

Blue Smoke, 3 quarts low?

Man, I would be concerned. I've never ran an engine 3 quarts low. It takes at least a quart to cover the pickup tube. Once the egine is running, about a quart remains suspended in the upper engine areas. 3 quarts low means you only had 2 quarts in there and that is barely enough. That's only enough oil if you are idling. It would be my guess that you did some serious damage to the engine running it on 2 quarts of oil.

When you replaced the plugs were any of them carboned up real bad?

No. I checked all the plugs when I changed them thinking that Im buring oil or something and that would be why the oil was so low. But I found nothing wrong with the plugs. All very clean. They were not platinum plugs like the ones I replaced them with.

I just put two different oil treatment products: STP Smoke Treatment and STP Engine Stop Leak.

It seems to have reduced the exhaust but I was looking at it during the night and the engine was still warm. I will drive it around today and see how it is when the engine is still pretty cold.

If your plugs are good and your oil pressur is good then your probably OK. The oil has to be going somewhere. If you have no leaks, then I don't know what to tell you. The puffs of smoke you are referring to is probably just the valve seals. That's fairly normal on an engine that old. It maybe a little early for it to be puffing smoke, but I wouldn't worry too much. There are brand new short blocks available for $1,100.00 and just about any reputable shop can refresh the heads for about $250.00 as long as they don't have to replace more than a couple of valves.

Drive it till it quits.

Thanks for the help. I was running it today and now it only smokes when I have the engine revving pretty high for 5-10 sec. Doesn't smoke with idle or low RPM's. This was not the case before. It does have 140,000 miles with no major engine problems in the past soI had to expect something to happen soon. I'll check the plugs again tomorrow and see if anythings leaking into the cylinders then I'll ship it off to the shop for whatever fixing needs to be done. I think it's still under extended warrantee. So the work will be covered. Again, thanks for your time.

I had this problem with my 97 dakota 5.2. So I opened up my throttle body and looked inside to my manifold and there was oil sitting in the bottom. So I took off my throttle body and turned it over and the pan on the bottom hyas a gasket. That gasket was blown out and sucking oil from the top of the pushrods into the manifold nad into the engine. I never seen any oil when I would run my truck but it would always be low. So go to your van take off the air intake and open up the butterfly and look into the bottom of the intake.

Oh yeah, that too....

Do you have labor knock (pinging)? If not, then your intake is probably OK.

Has anyone tried to put the belly pan on the intake with just High Temp RTV Silicone?

No there is no pinging at all. I am letting a group of people take it to San Diego today so the car isnt here for me to look in the intake. I really have no idea if the belly pan was put on with silicone. I usually just take this car to my mechanic... who knows what he has done to it. Is that bad if he were to do that?

No, I was just wondering if anyone on this forum has ever installed an intake belly pan with RTV.

When I upgrade my cam I'm going to give it a shot.
