Subject: How hot does your 4.7L get? Summer/AC on
IP: Logged

Hey guys,
How hot does your 2000-2002 4.7L get with the A/C on, stop and go traffic, with 90+ temps outside. My 2000 4.7 went up to around 235-240 for first time ever in 2 years. We've had a heat wave for about a week here in DC area and it consistently is over the 210 mark city driving. I know it's still in the "normal" range but this is a first in two years that it has gone over the 210 mark consistently. Do you think it could be a water pump failing?? It has been hot before and it hasn't done it. The coolant level is good, new oil, radiator is clean in front. What do you think? Oh yeah, the tranny, just serviced, shifts very weird when the temp is up at 230-240.

I would have it checked out. I dont even run
the clutch fan, and with the AC on your elec fan
would be on all the time. it should be running
colder than that, hell, I race mine at the track in
90+ weather, and it doesnt get that hot.

I have the Heavy duty cooling/charging pkg on my 2K 4.7 and I've never seen my temp needle move even in stop & go traffic with air on in 120 degree temps.

Yes, it does get that hot in Arizona.

But what could it be? And you know the dealer is not going to be able to replicate that unless its 95 degrees outside and they sit in traffic for an hour. I don't think they are going to spend that time on my truck. They aren't that considerate. And you know as well as I do that if there isn't a code to pull or a leaky drip they can look at, they ain't gonna fix sh*t.

Greeno,

Florida here with a 2000 4.7 club cab, have never seen mine over 195 and I run the air ALL the time and often pull a 16 trailer with a 1000 gallon proane tank converted to a smoker on it. Often the bed it loaded down with gear for my cooking venture at the same time. I also admit I do not bably my truck very much when pulling/hauling this stuff. I do get into the pedal some to get up to speed, MPG really sux when I do that but I think it is kinda neat seeing a Dodge get up and go with al that weight on the back end. Still haven't seen anything over 195 though.

On a trip to Yosemite, 106 Degrees Outside, Truck LOADED with
gear, firewood, etc, driving up a LONG grade between Bishop and
Mammoth, CA. With AC on, truck dropped down to 65 mph max ...
when the temp guage got 1/8th above the half way point I shut off the
AC till I hit the top of the hill. Over the hill, 80mph, AC back on.

...I think the cooling system is pretty darn good.
(I got the HD system)

That sounds to hot, I don't run a clutch fan and it runs just above the low normal line, when its over 100 out and in trafic it might go half way.
Do you have a 180 stat. that would help.

Gibson headers, Gibson Cat-back, Edelbrock IAS shocks, K & N drop in, 180 stat, Jet stage II chip, ARE Lid

Big blue,
I'm down in the Northern VA area. And I forgot to mention, I was beating on it, A/C on, very hot, hard accelerations, braking etc. Once I stopped all that, the temp went back down. I checked the clutch fan operation and it's fine, also the electric fan is on normally. Hasn't gone over 195 since and it's been hot here still.
