Hello Dodge owners. I am currently being attacked for buying a Dodge by a Toyota owner. I posted a message about a few problems I was having, told this person about it - and they told me a) shouldn't have bought a Dodge, and b) if I'd read about it I would catch these problems and buy different.

Now, I did read, and was under the impression that my Dodge Dakota 4.7 5-speed was a good truck. I need defense. Any posts pertaining the reliability, coolness, and any whybuydodgeness would be GREATLY appreciated - as I am having trouble explaining that these are sturdy trucks in the midst of repairing mine....

Best Regards...

all thoes guys want to say is "how better made a toyota is" when you start taking 1/4 mile times they keep there mouth shut.

why the hell did you go to a toyota forum and tell them you were having problems?? what did you think they were going to say? if someone came here and said "my ford is in the shop again", most of the guys here would give them crap.

Agree on the 1/4 mile. But to clarify - I left my post on THIS, DODGE DAKOTA forum, not a Toyota forum. I only SPOKE to the Toyota guy about my truck.

I'll try to type in better English next time.

Ben, 4.7 5-Speed all stock and I'm stickin to it.

My stock RC 4.7L 5spd beat Mustangs, a Vette, and Preludes at the SOLO II track on my first try. It was a VERY twisty course too, ours is known for being one of the hardest and longest compared to many of the others.

It starts right up in winter without any hesitiation! Even though it's 2WD it can plough right through snow drifts and deep snow.

You can tow stuff really really well.

It's cheaper than a Toyota to buy anyways.
They hold their value about the same.

Everything else is opinionated and doesn't really matter. I say, tell them to f*ck off and you don't give a rat
s @ss what they think because this is your truck and you like it. You don't have to defend it, you got it because YOU liked it.

Personally, I was all about the Tacoma when I was looking for a truck. But before I got one, I remembered a friend telling me long ago that Dakotas are pretty fast and I should check them out. So, I went and took a couple different models for a spin. I LOVED every bit of it more than the Tacoma. Even the egonomic features.

I tried to find a used vehicle to my liking, but I couldn't find anything. Instead, I put together a vehicle only to find later, that it's a very common combo for building a lil speedy truck. The insurance also better BTW.

Hey, I own a Dodge and a Toyota. I like my Dodge and my Toyota for very different reason. If you need someone to justify your purchase you have much larger issues. If you like your Dodge and enjoy owning it then that should be enough. I do not know what was said in your post but the truth is the truth. If you do not like what someone is telling you ignore them. I still know people that will swear that synthetic oil will destroy your enige or that they will not work with wet clutchs on a motor cycle. I just ignore them. My Family has owned a 1970 Dart swinger, a 383,10 different Toyota's one ford, one Geo Metro, one Plymoth Laser and one Dakota. I was an aprentice from 1988-1992 tech for BMW and Toyota from 1992-2000 and now do Tech. support. I can honestly tell you that Dodge is not even close in terms of quality and durability. What they lack in those areas they make up for in styling and cost!!! The privious poster was right about performance edge going to our Dak's. if you are compareing them to a Tundra. If highly recomend anyone that is going to dismiss Toyota's fullsize at least take one for a test drive. I would never try to convert anyone. I just think you ought to see what the competition is doing. I test drove all makes before getting a Dodge and I have to say none of them were perfect. Dodge had the best price and configuration, Toyota felt more solid and had much better brakes, Chevy had the most powerful engine and most content.........Only time will tell if I made the right choice when I choose my Dodge! So again I have to say drive your truck; enjoy it; and ignore what you do not want to hear!

Don't let that turd get to you. Most people are overly critical out of jealousy, trying to justify their own actions. That guy has probably has his posterior handed to him by many a Dakota and just can't admit he made a mistake. Toyotas aren't perfect either.

When it came time to replace my SUV I decided I was going to buy a truck. I, too looked at the Tundra and dollar for dollar you can't beat the Dakota. It performs better, looks better inside and out and down the road it's not going to cost me several hundred dollars just to replace an alternator! As for performance, who besides the factory is making high performance Toy parts anyway? Not many that I've seen.

Blow him off, do some research to prove him wrong and tell him where to put it.

Wally

Thanks all. BTW - I was just trying to have some fun with the guy, and was looking for other Dodge stories. I owned a Tacoma for 5 years, and just switched camps... So I could talk about the advantage of a 2.7 4 all day long, but only learning the Dodge

All in good fun fellas - just looking for other knowledge to bolster what I've already learned. It's just a modern Chevy vs. Ford mentality (I grew up in a '65 Chevy, 283)

I own a Dak and drive a Tacoma at work. I hate the Tacoma. I would never buy one. It has no traction when the road even hints at being wet. It has no acceleration to speak of. The ride is rougher then heck, and the whole interior feels very cheap. Every aspect of it. Driving that Tacoma makes me realize how glad I am I bought my Dak. And it also makes me love it even more. Toyota should offer a complimentary 3 year chiropractor plan with the purchase of each Tacoma.

Ben

You know how they love to brag about running forever. Here is a story you can tell that guy to shut him up. My uncle owns a 89' ram 150 with a 318/904(3spd auto) 2wd that he bought off a lot when the company that ordered it never picked it up. It is sparse only rubber mat on the floor with no ac, but it does know the word quit. He currnetly has 398,000 miles and those are all work truck miles. He has carried crazy loads like 2 1/2 tons of gravel to dozens of cars 125miles with a tow bar at 80mph to a cousins junkyard. I could only imagine the sustained rpms that motor indured. Some of those cars of which only turned one way and had to be dragged in the other direction. The craziest one was when he tow his bosses 1977 36' egg harbor boat. The thing was so heavy he had to put blocks between the frame and axles and the front tires were barely on the ground. The only things that ever broke were the distributor, multiple sets of motor mounts, a spindle and the sure grip rear-end. The rear happened when a lady ran a stop sign and he was going to hit her but he saw a child seat in the back. He yanked the steering wheel and hit a curb, went air born and shattered the spider gears when the passanger rear tire hit the top of a fire hydrant. He actually drove it home but noticed it felt funny the nest day. When looked at the rear the gears fell apart in his hands. The truck paid for itself three times over only differnce now is that it sound like it's half diesel. Toyotas miles are usually more commuter based, cuising all on the inter state so there is no comparison.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that there really isn't a comparable Toyota equivalent to the Dak. (That's one of the main reasons that DC is doing so good with it).

The Tacoma has a way smaller cab and box compared to the CC Dak, while the Tundra is quite a bit bigger - more in the league of the Ram1500. Don't know what the GVW of the Tacoma is, but it's got to be a lot smaller, too. And you can't even get a Tundra with a 5-speed. Both Toyotas are also more expensive than a similarly-equipped Dak.

So, IMHO I'd make more sense if they were slamming you for getting a too-small vehicle compared to the Tundra/Ram or a too large one compared to a Tacoma/S10. After that was resolved, then maybe cost/durability/power issues could then be discussed.

i to have owned a 2.7l 4x4 tacoma and it was a rough riding, small, slow, very uncomfortable truck. but it would beat any other truck out there in 4wd. i got a dakota cuz its cheaper and since i dont go mudding much anymore i didnt need that good off a truck i wanted a better riding faster truck so i got a 2000 dakota 4.7l auto 4x4. i stand behind the toyota on off road capability and i know it could beat my dakota anyday on that but my for what i use my truck for 99% of the time as just transportation my dakota beats the tacoma. so its just basicaly what your priorties on a truck are.

I have always been faithful to imports, since I grew up in mexico, economy and reliability is first priority, even if we have to sacrify confort. Before I bought my Dakota QC, I did an extensive research looking up on every aspect possible to balance out an overall best truck to fulfill my needs "not my likes". I drove test every crew cab out there and even some fullsize and midsize extended cabs just in case I could not find the right crew cab. My focus was cabin space. I was always told by my father that trucks were a waste of vehicle for those who didn't use them for what it was made for.and I agree cause I never liked trucks in the first place because of passenger capacity but having a house of my own and a child, now I need a truck/car vehicle and the only truck that offered me mid-size car confort and space and the ability to carry and tow large objects was the Dakota Quad Cab.The power was a plus++. That made me more than satisfied. When having preference over a vehicle or brand, it all comes to what fulfill your needs.weather is reliability, confort, luxury, economy,or performance.
