Would a manual v6 beat or keep up with a 4.7 V8 automatic ( both stock)? It might sound stupid but I'm just curious since I just bought a 4.7 automatic. I sure hope the V8 auto could take it on! What about a 5 speed 4.3 s-10, does the V8 automatic stand a chance? Thanks for any help?

No way could a 4.3 5 speed S-10 keep up with a V8 Dakota , I did the test myself. I have a '99 Club Cab Dakota with a 318/A500/3.55 rear M1 , no cat and a Dynomax Ultra Flo and run one of my friends all the time in his '02 S-10 Reg cab with a 4.3 Vortec/5 speed/4.10 posi(was 3.42)rear and he has headers , 3" single exhaust with a Flowmaster , bigger TB , MSD 6A and 26x10.5 M/T ET Streets. Last time out I ran a 9.93@73mph in the 1/8 and he ran a 10.27@65mph in the 1/8. I gotta do something about traction though because I'm spinning pretty bad off the line and he jumps almost 2 cars on me off the line since he got the gears and sticky tires and I have to chase him down , I usually pull him by about 1 1/2 cars through the 1/8.

I run consistent 9.8's, a V6 5 spd would have
no chance, unless it had a supercharger/turbo
or nitrous setup. and I have a 3.55 open diff!

Well i have a 4.3 vortec (basicly stock) in an s10 blazer and i dont have any problems keeping up with v8 dakotas/durangos or ne thing like that. sure they pull on me a little bit but come on they have 2 more cyl. and more horse power too. so dont underestimate the 4.3, but it would be nice to see Chevy come out with a small block in an s10 truck....

horsepower and cylinders are just numbers. you could have a 350Hp car that weighed 6,000lbs and a car with 200hp and 3000lbs and the 200hp car would tear up the 350hp car. Its weight to power ratio's, the new S-10's are alot smaller and lighter than the new style dakota's. so no matter how you look at it, in order for it to be fair, you'd need more power in the dakota, or more weight on the S-10, you choose whatever you gotta do. Oh yea, i had a 4.3L blazer, didn't stand a chance against a bycicle. no it wasn't the vortec, but a vortec of the same year has only 10 more horse and 10 more torque, why bother blowing the money.

Here is my take on the V6 5sp vs a V8 auto. My buddy has a 98 Dak RC 4x2 and I have a 99 Dak CC 4x4. Buddy as the V6 5spd and I have the 318 auto. We lined them up on a country road and here is the results.

On takeoff, I jumped in front but as soon as our RPMs started building up he started catching up. Then when my truck shifted into second, I jumped ahead again. Then when the RPMs started getting high, he caught up again. As you probably know the V6 produces a lot of its power at high RPMs where the V8 produces it down low. Now we stopped racing at about 100MPH and we were pretty much neck and neck. Now if you look at the specs he has 18.9lbs/hp and I have 17.3lbs/hp. But the real kicker that a lot of people don't realize is that an automatic transmission cannot put all of its power to the wheels until the torque converter locks up (which, in my truck doesn't happen until about 65mph with overdrive off under full acceleration) and a manual can put all of its power down once the clutch is completely disengaged.

Another thing is we raced with a loads in the bed of our trucks (stupid, I know). He had a 600lb ATV in his bed and I had a 800lb ATV in my bed. This time I totally stomped him. So as you can tell there isn't much difference between an unloaded V6 and V8, but where the V8 pulls through is when you are hauling/towing something, you don't have to work the motor as hard to get results.

Just my take on the issue.
