Subject: Dakota 5.7L Hemi Magnum
IP: Logged

Message:
A good informed DC guy from Germany told me that the new 5.7L Hemi Magnum will not only come with the RAMs but will also be available in the Dakota, Durango and the Grand Cherokee from next year(to compete against cars like the ML55, the Porsche Cayenne and the maybe coming Porsche Cayenne Pickup).
The engine in these cars should have 355hp (10 more than in the RAMs) and 365 ft-lb.

Do you have more details on this information?

Tim

BTW a nice detail: The expensive Porsche Cayenne (w/o Turbos) is not faster than the Dakota R/T :-)

Well some of those rumors are true. The 5.7 Hemi will replace the 5.9 Magnum. Therefore, the Ram, Dakota RT, and Durango will receive these new powerplants. As for the Grand Cherokee, it probably won't see it until the next redesign in 2004 or 2005, along with the 3.7 V6. The 5.7 Hemi will also be available in the new rear-wheel drive 300N debuting in 04 or 05. Also, the LH sedans will become rear-wheel drive in the model redesign in 04 or 05. Look for Chrysler to be debuting a lot of interesting and exciting new vehicles in the coming years.

Dont expect the trucks with this engine to be
cheap, Your gonna pay for that power, at the
time of purchase and to insure. See any
affordable cars/trucks with 350 HP? Not likely,
your in a class all its own alright!

alright guys... lets just hope they don't change the durango... cause if you think about it... if they put the 5.7 in the darango, that means it'll fit in the dakota... so just go buy one off the internet. or directly from the dealer, and put it in your dakotas along with a racing 5-speed transmission. slap the "magnum power" decal from the I4's and go race some people.

hahahahahahahahaha... thas what i'm thinkin.

If you want an insurance break buy a Hemi in a 1/2 ton reg cab Ram. One of my friends is 24 and just ordered his - '03 Reg cab SX(?- it's a base model) with a Hemi , 5 speed auto , 3.92 and sure grip and chrome 17's - it's running $19,000 and the insurance is the same as his '98 SS/T with a 360.

My only concern with the 5.7 hemi in the regular 1500 trucks is that they are not bulit on a sport type suspension like our R/T's and they dont have sabilizer or anti sway bars in the front and rear, not do they come equipped with 255 wide 55 series tires. I think you'll be getting a work type truck with a powerful motor, not a tight handling R/T

texaslawdawg,

Thats the point...Check out Hotchkis suspension.

https://www.hotchkis.net/secure_index.html.

They just released their new TVS tuned suspension for the New Ram at $1150. The TVS replaces the springs, lowers the truck, and adds sway bars, which results in much improved handling.

If you purchased that new truck described above by moparjoe20 and bought the Hotchkis suspension, then I think you would leave stock Dakota R/T's in the dust (unfortunate for me because I love my Dakota R/T).

Then all you would need is some wheels and tires. I think you could pick up some nice chrome 20" wheels and tires for around $3000 or less.

You would have one sweet performing truck for less than the costs of a new R/T.

You can do all this and avoid the high insurance associated with a factory offered Hemi sport truck. As far as the insurance company knows...you have a work truck.

Just something to think about...........

I would be more than happy if I could find one around here because my father and pretty much my whole family are real big on racing, especially Mopar. If anyone has any ideas or comments on helping mre find my dakota, let me know. Thanxx!!

Nobody anywhere can get a Hemi Dakota from the factory, yet... the above posts talking about ordering Hemi's are in Rams, not Dakotas. From some early 1/4 mile testing of a 1500 Ram 2wd RC Hemi with the 20's, auto (only possible transmission on the 1500 Hemis), and 3.92 LS resulted in an uncorrected 14.85 @ 93 mph. That's pretty darn good considering there was only a single run made with lots of wheel spin on a fresh, heavily optioned truck. I bet by the time summer rolls around some bone stock Hemi rams will be in the lower to mid 14 range, faster then the fastest Dakotas ever ran stock. The lower optioned Hemi Rams can be bought for well under $20,000 even as low as $17,000.

The 2003 R/Ts have added a bunch of content. was that $19,500 ram a 1500? was that the MSRP? They will sell Rams all day for $1000 off msrp and there are also $2,000-$2,500 in incentives. I was offered a low ball price of $16,500 for a ST Hemi ram with a couple options, but the truck I'm ordering is a QC with lots more stuff and that pushed the price up to $26,000. The current best deal on a 2003 R/T would put it at about $19,000 but you get lots more features then that stripped down Ram.

Hersbird mentioned the 14 sec. 1/4 mi. times for the Hemi 1500 Ram. Some of you may recall the stock '93 5.2L reg. cab that "Mopar Action" recorded 14.2 sec. in '93 on the stock 75 series tires, 3.92 auto, stock single exhaust; the only mods were the MP 25-hp computer and a K&N drop in!Weight still matters...a bunch.

I priced a 2 WD SB 3:55 5.7 SLT AUTO LSD, so you get the SLT package power windows heated mirrors etc. Plus 4-wheel anti-lock (they said I have to get these with the 5.7??) box liner and soft tonneau cover, security group, and trailer tow group for MSRP 32,085.00 canadian OR ,20,508.00 American. The 2wd hemi 1500 is rated about the same mileage as my 4x4 dak.Thats a pretty good value for the money I think. It would take about 44,000.00 MSRP Canadian to get into a lightning. And like Hersbird says at 35 hp less (than a lightning) you will see some respectable times.

The new ram is lighter then the previous one, but with a stiffer frame. That 93 was still modified, and it's really only fair to compare stock to stock. I would like to see that article on the 93 though. I have a hard time buying a 14.2 pure stock with only the PCM and a drop in. I had a 93 with quite a few more tricks then that that ran a best of 14.9. I bet they had a few tricks as well besides just dropping in the pcm and air cleaner. Still about the best my 93 would run "pure stock" was well in the 15's, and I ran qite a few times at a cool sea level track. I think the fastest pure stock Dakota times have been RC R/Ts and some have been as fast as 14.5 showroom stock, I think the Rams ultimately will beat that mark.
2wd curb weights (no driver but full tank):
1500 RC ST Hemi Ram- 4635#
RC Dakota R/T- 4026#
CC Dakota R/T- 4224#
RC Dakota 4.7/5-speed- 3759#
Another thing to consider is that even though the Ram weighs 600 pounds more then the Dakota R/T, 400 of those pounds are over the rear tires. Some of what is lost by the added weight will be gained back from traction, the rest will come from 100 more horsepower.

Supposedly no problems with anybody's so far, and that's also the automatic used with the Hemi in the 2500 and 3500 trucks as well. Once it was put out that they did some strengthing to the transmission for Hemi applications, but that might actually be for all 545rfe's. The good thing I see about it is that it has a lower 1st gear then the 46re, which will help getting those tall tires moving. Also it has dual overdrives so if I go to 4.56 it will still cruise at a much lower RPM then my stock R/T does.

Thanks for the curb weight info, Hersbird. That Mopar Action '93 was one length slower in the 1/4 than a 275hp 6-speed Trans Am in the article. I showed the magazine to a Mustang nut and he never gave it back! About the same time, Car and Driver tested a Lightning, and said that it was fast, but that the driver should look over his shoulder for the Dak.
