Subject: Is a catback worth it for an '02 4.7 aut

Some have said that catbacks aren't worth the expense for newer trucks. I want to know why they are saying that. Is the exhaust on an '02 SLT QC auto 4.7 4x4 already stainless? It still seams to have a couple bends and ripples that an aftermarket wouldn't have.

Please enlighten me. I was looking into a Borla. Tell me why I would be an idiot or a genius to spend a large sum of money for steel tubing and a muffler.

stock pipe is stainless, and flows just fine.
the best thing to do is get a high flow cat and
free flowing muffler (dynomax, magnaflow,
flowmaster, etc.) and leave the stock pipe. if
you're going to be doing a lot of mods, pcm,
TB, supercharger, etc, then switch to the 3"
pipe. I would definately recomend getting a
cold air intake first though.

Thanks D. That really helps.

I was looking at the Intense Performance Cold Air Intake (around 3 bills).

Can you recommend a better one (or cheaper for same quality). I plan on removing that plastic shield in the front right corner to help out.

How about a good high flow cat? I'm pretty much sold on Magnaflow for a muffler.

If you go with the IP stage III, then you won't need to remove the plastic flap. It has a flexible hose that routes over to your fender well where it pics up its cooler air. If you go with the stage II, then yank the flap to get some cooler air into the engine compt. I have the stage II with Z-tube and it is awesome. E-mail me if you want some pics. golfinglenn@attbi.com

carsound cat is the way to go...hopefully I get
mine within the next couple of weeks.
magnaflow is a great choice, I think they make
the carsound cats...not sure though.

Intense performance Z-tube is the way to go, I
would have gone that route, but I dont think
you can use it with the kenne bell
supercharger, so I have settled for the
homebrewed until I get the kenne bell.

change to a 180 t-stat aswell, a great/cheap
mod.

Are the muffler and cat aftermarkets mentioned above bolt ons? Or will I have to take it to my local muffler shop to have them put them on?

BTW- Is it really that important to go with a "Name Brand" thermostat? I can buy one at Checker Auto for like $4. A stat is a stat, right?

Thanks

A stat is not a stat. Spend the extra $3 and get the Robertshaw. I think the # is GT755-180.

yeah the robert shaw should be $5.95 at any
auto parts store.

If you get a catback system (gibson etc) you
can bolt it on, if you just change the muffler
and cat, you will need an exhaust shop to cut
and weld the new one in place.
