Message:
I just finished putting my heads on my 97 dakota with a 318. My first impression was WHOOOA. I thought that they were going to be too much for the engine, but I was certainly wrong. Seat of the pants dyno says aroung 25 horse power. I cant wait till the computer adjust, NOW I need some slicks!

Hey thanks for the reply I was wondering if anyone out there had them on a 318, as long as your cam big enough with a large exhaust and good intake you should have no problem also. It was a lot of work to change them over but it was sure worth it. Anyone else out there have them on a 318????

Isn't that a little much? There has to be more to it then that. How much does it really cost?

I only have 1100 dollars into my heads, and a lot of my labor to put them on. 860 for heads, 160 for valves, 10 for head bolts, the rest was for gaskets and a thermostat. Doesn't sounds so bad afterall, considering a supercharger nets you about 100 or so HP for about 3800 dollars. And the heads definetly werent too much for my truck that has a 318 in it, I think that If I were to upgrade the injectors and cam (I have the R/T Cam) that it would make an even greater improvement in power? ANy suggestions for a cam?

You get the 2.02 heads w/ a kickass port & polish job and a good lift cam your talkin a good 60-70HP and it cost me about $1500 less than a SC would cost. Plus you get the nice lope sound at a stoplight which will turn heads faster than a blower sound ;)

I have a .512/.512 lift cam w/ 3" exhaust all the way back w/ no cats so I'm thinkin mine will handle it heh heh :)

Oh by the way thats a Kammer & Kammer Racing cam...believe me you can't find a better cam for the Dakotas out there...they grind cams specifically for racing so they know their sh!t...

Contact Bobby Kammer at 937-237-8675

Tell him your setup and he'll workout a grind for you right then and there and ship it to you in a week or so and they're only about $260.

it depends on where you get a blower. just like he got a deal on heads, one can get a deal on a blower.

THanks for the reply about the cam, I think that the R/T cam is to mild for my current setup. I will definely look into getting a bigger one sometime in the future. Good project for this winter.

Is everything the same on the R/T heads. If I get the 1.92 R/T's and put stock valves and springs out of my heads and crower 1.7's will all of this bolt up just like on the stock magnum heads?

MikeD: Are you already running 1.92 R/T heads or the stock magnum ones?

Well it was a funny story about those heads...I ordered 2.02 R/T ported & polished heads from KRC. Got some heads in the mail that weren't ported and polished but me and my buddy were putting in the cam in my truck and I just assumed the heads were gonna be kickass (thats what I get for trusting KRC). So I take them outta the box, keep in mind these were "accidentally" sent to me these were unported & unpolished 1.92 R/T heads instead of my order of the 2.02's, but I thought they were just 2.02's unported, etc. Well its the weekend and KRC is closed and I have half my engine tore apart already have the cam degreed in and the stock heads won't handle the big cam as well so I go ahead and bolt up the 1.92's that he sent me. Well I call him Monday and turns out he sent me the wrong ones...he took my 2.02's to a Mopar show.

I have the 2.02's in my room now just waitin to install em. My friend has been busy so we haven't gotten around to it. Hopefully soon though I'm dyin to get em on to see what they'll do.

Oh and about the 1.7's...if your planning on not installing a new cam they'll be ok w/ the new heads, but if your gettin a bigger cam you'll either have to get the new heads shaved for clearance from the big cam and higher lift rockers...or scrap the 1.7's and get 1.6 RR's. And are you talking about getting the 1.92 R/T's that aren't fully assembled and puttin in your stock valves? Lets see you have the 318, I'm not sure what the stock valve size is on those but if you had an R/T you could buy bare 1.92 R/T heads and swap valves, because 1.92 is the stock valve size on 5.9's.

Sorry bout the long post.

The stock valve intake valve size for a 318 1.92. All the parts will swap to a set of the 1.92 R/T heads. Although any good and sensible person would probably buy new valves anyway. I could of reused my exhaust valves but since everything else was new I figured I should replace them as well. I dont think that you should try to run 1.7 rockers with a radical cam without first checking the piston to valve clearence, otherwise you could be really suprised when you fire it up for the first time and have a catostrophic failure, that would suck

No cam swap. Don't feel like tearing into the bottom end. Just want to swap the heads for the R/T ones and add some 1.7 RR's and an M1 all at the same time while the top end is torn down.

BTW. I know the M1 will mainly help the upper rpms and I may lose some low end. What will the heads do. I don't want to lose too much low end since my truck is 4wd.

My truck seemed to lose some lower end torque after the M1, I was disapointed. Untill....I put the 2.02 heads on, they seemed to either give me a lot more power over the entire RPM range or I got some low end torque back. THis I was happy for.

I did not port them out, I did clean the casting up on them, because as you know they are fairly rough, I did this with a dremil and it came out pretty good, it wasnt as hard as I thought it would be to do, its just very time consuming...

I guess thats what KRC's machinist did too just cleaned up the casting w/ a dremil or something.

There's a guy here in dallas his name is Gene Quick and if you saw the ported heads he does you'd crap your pants its so good. He ports the exhaust ports to almost the edge of the bolt hole and tapers the bottom port so its nice & smooth. It's at least opened up 1/2-3/4" bigger in diameter over the stock size...not just where it looks like its been smoothed. The heads I got from KRC don't even look ported just smoothed out to where there is no roughness.

I just got a set of stock ones from the local dodge dealer here in Maine. There not too expensive, but you might consider trying to find a high performance set somewhere depending on what you plan on doing with your truck in the future ie supercharger. I love driving my truck now with those heads on, it revs so fast and has massive amounts of power above 3500, and I can still drive at 25 mph in 5th gear, the best of both worlds.

Actually I lost a lot with the M1, but I seemed to gain some back with the 2.02's and now the motor has a huge top end to add to it. The motor pulls so hard from 3500 right to 5500, you cant shift fast enough in first and second. Im sure those Felpro's are better quality then the stockers are.

Sure was,it was backfiring out of the throttle body, but seems to be getting better now. I have figured that it takes about 200 miles, and all different wheather conditions, hot humid cold, for the computer to relearn how to make the truck run. My truck is still a bit hesitant off the line at low RPMS, I think that I need to adjust my TPS voltage.
How does your truck go with the new heads on their?

Thats exactly what mine has been doing...hesitant at low RPM's & backfiring...I'm thinking I may have not got a pushrod aligned properly cuz I'm throwing a misfire code in the #5 cylinder...then again that may just be the cam throwing that code.
I'm gonna take off the valve cover to make sure the rockers & pushrods are correct. The backfiring could be cause I'm not running on all 8 cylinders.

Are you running roller rockers on your Mike? What cam are you running?
