4.7, I have looked all around for a 180T. Not Napa, CarQuest, Advance, etc. carry one. Your best bet would be speedtweaks.net. Won't effect warranty. A 180T just keeps your engine running slightly cooler and richer. Hope this helps.

The Robert shaw part number you want is GT755-180. I got mine at autozone. NOBODY will list this stat for your 4.7, but it is the right one. Also, the procedure is a little different on the 4.7 if you have not done one yet. If you want some tips, feel free to e-mail me.

I agree with golfing glen.

Don't go ask for a 180tstat for a 4.7.

Just get what glen says. I did it a year ago on my 01 QC.

Autozone is where I got mine also.

Got mine today. Popped the hood and it appears the t/stat housing is at the water pump inlet at the end of the bottom hose. Is this correct?? sure would appreciate someone's input.

Wally,

Yes, the t-stat housing is on the bottom hose where it bolts to the engine block. You will have to pull the plastic plate that goes from the radiator to the cross-member, and it helps to put the front tires up on ramps. Also, notice when you remove the old stat, that the gasket is re-useable and has a bump in it where the thermostats flange has a groove in it to fit into. also, the gasket only goes into the housing one way, also with a bump and groove. You will have to put a similar groove into your new stat like the stock stat has, otherwise things will not fit right and you will get leaks.

Thanks, Glenn. Should have pulled the plastic splashguard, would have made for more access.

A note to all, there are three stats in this size. The basic part number is GT755. The last three digits are the temp setting, being 160, 180 and 195. If you are using a Jet chip in your PCM, do as they say and get the 160. I realize that some of the gain comes from running richer at the lower temp, but it seems that Jet strongly recommends the 160 for a reason. Now that the stat is installed I think I'll do some back to back comparisons with and without the chip to see which is more responsible for the gains I'm seeing.

Regards,
Wally

I have a 2002 Dakota w/ a 4.7L. I was wandering if you have any good performance tips since there really isn't that much stuff out for the 4.7L, yet. Right now I have a Volant Cold Air Intake, cat-back exhaust system, and Bosch Platinum Plugs.
I was wanting to get the Jet stage 2 chip, which calls for a 180t-stat, but I can't find one. Have you heard anything about this chip, and is it worth buying?

All data points in the direction of "save your money" as far as any chips go for the 4.7. Word has it that the PCM sees the chip and then just adjusts for it to get back to the regular settings. I have not heard from anybody yet that they have gotten any benefit from an aftermarket chip and a performance PCM is not available yet. Only option is to send yours off and have it flashed for performance settings.

TB Mods?
IP: Logged

Message:
I was wandering if there are any mods that I can do to the TPS on my TB? And would it be worth boring it out? I have a 4.7L. I know that there is something that you can do to the TPS on the 5.9L. There is a certain voltage that you have to set it at and I just wanted to know what that would be on the 4.7L and how you go about setting it?
Some advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Jesse,

As far as the TB goes, contact Dan at www.thefastman.com. He bores and polishes TB's as well as awesome engine work. I have NEVER heard a bad word about Dan, and his work is first rate. I have one of his TB's on my Durango and some engine guys have looked at it and were very impressed with his work. I have pictures of my stock TB next to the fastman TB that I put in if you want to see the differences.

As far as the TPS mod goes, I did it to my truck and afterwards found out that once again, with the 4.7, the computer checks to see that the voltage is within a certain range. As long as that criteria is met, it is happy. It does not matter if it is in the low range or high range of acceptable, truck will react the same. I believe this was discussed on the speedtweaks website, or it might have been here on the dakota forum before.

For the performance mods on the 4.7, most go with a polished and bored TB, a new high flow intake like Intense Performance sells, or Tony from QuickD also has a good product. Couple this with a cut in flow through muffler like Flo-Pro, flowmaster, or MBRP from Jonas at Premier Automotive for a nice loud rumble. I have also found smoother idle and response by going to autolite 3923 plugs and a 180 degree Robertshaw thermostat.

The last thing I did that was a huge performance booster was putting in a set of Mopar High Output (HO) Cams. If you have any questions, E-mail me at golfinglenn@attbi.com.

I put Bosch Platinum plugs in already and they seemed to help it. I have a Volant Cold Air intake and a cat-back exhaust. I think I'm gonna put a 180t-stat in this w/e. I'll probably have my TB worked, too, like you said. Did you notice a difference w/ the 180t-stat? And is it even worth the time to put it in?

I think it is worth the effort. Keeps the engine a little cooler. I have written up some instructions for the 4.7, since it is quite different from any other motor I have worked on.
