I am thinking about swapping the V-6 out of my 87'. I know it will bolt up to the tranny @ the bell housing, but does the V-6 flex plate go on the 318 or does it require some special flywheel? Hope somebody out there has done this with a pre-91' Dakota (i.e. one that wasn't offered w/ a V-8).

So...what your saying is that I need to look for a flex-plate from a 360? I have very little expierience with trannies. Do all automatics use flex-plates? Do only manuals run flywheels? I was kind of confused when I got the V-6 out and there wasn't a flywheel.

I did that with a 91, everything bolted up, just had to beef up the suspension and change the torque convertor. Also did a tranny flush and filter change, bought a K&N , checked and fixed cracks in the frame.

You gotta change the torque convertor to keep the rear-end from fly off when you peel out.

I also recommend the holley throttle body.

I've looked up the motor mounts and brackets for the V-8 in a '91 Dakota. The V-6 and V-8 have the same P/N for the brackets, but differ for the mounts. The V-6 brackets are good for '87 through '94. Now, do you have to move the brackets or the crossmember to put the V-8 in, or does it bolt up where it's at? The V-8 wasn't offered in '87, so wouldn't have other holes drilled or knock-outs or anything.

What we had to do with my V6 mounts was just cut them to fit the V8.
