Subject: Winter tires & wheels 4 Dakota R/T

Hi all

I bought here in Switzerland a 1999 Dodge Dakota R/T 5.9 and now there are several open questions due to Dodge doesn't import to Switzerland nor to Germany.
I know it is a little early but nevertheless I am interested in winter tires/wheels. The R/T is equiped with 17 x 9" rims and 17" 255/50 tires. Which rim and tire size do you recommend for winter. Snow chains must fit due to the 2WD.

Thanks you in advance.

Tim

BTW the Gibson dual rear exit exhaust was the first I ordered. Some other recommendations except for an K&N of course?

Tim,

I have no problem getting Dodge to ship stuff to me here in Germany. As for the R/T Tires the original size of them is 255/55-17. In winter I would run stock tires or get a set of Dakota sport rim 16" like on mine and get a tire size you can chain up. Chain up????????? The stock Sport+ tires (265/65-16) would be to big for the R/T so I would suggest dropping to a 255/75-16, these should chain good and keep the speedo correct in winter. Last winter here in Frankfurt DE I had my Nissan XE KingCab and ran Positive outset 9" Rims and the 225/60-15 BFGoodrich tires that stuck out the fender wells about 2" and had no problem with the snow. (except getting out of my driveway) What ever you do Good luck and Sandbags lots of Sandbags.

Here in Missoula, Montana I used my R/T as a daily driver all winter. I used the steel 15" wheels off a 93 Dakota and bought BFGoodrich 235/75/15 studded snows for all 4 wheels (about $360 total from a local tire shop). I also put 10 fifty pound bags of sand in the rear and had chains but never needed them this winter. The 235/75/15's are about an inch taller then the stock 255/55/17's but still there is plenty of room for chains on a stock ride hieght R/T. It may be difficult to find used Dakota rims in your area but americian racing makes a steel 15" wheel for Dakotas new that are under $50 each, maybe an americian racing vender would be easier to find, or find somebody willing to do international shipping on e-bay.

I use the exact same thing but mine are the ugly 93 Dakota siwrly alumninum rims and that size tyre. Works great! I am about 200 miles north of Hersbird. Mine cost me about a little over 300 total for everything.

Never been to Switzerland, but we get plenty of snow here. 'SPECIALLY this last winter, OMG. I was hitting snow drifts two feet high in below 0 degree weather and much less with that wind chill. With enough weight you can go thru quite a bit of stuff. I have a 2WD 4.7L RC 3.92 5spd and I was able to do pretty good in winter. I found myself in some situations where a 4WD would have helped a lot, but everytime I was doing something I shouldn't have been doing, I shoulda been using a 4WD vehicle anyways!

I thought it handled very nice in winter and is a pretty damn good cold weather truck on synthetic lubes. I think you should really do fine without chains, they usualy do more harm than good from what I have seen. I would however, recc. you put ~300+ pounds in back depending on where you're going.
