Subject: Pedal vibrates after new TB
IP: Logged

Message:
hey guys,

just installed a new TB from Fastman and seem to be having the classic pedal vibration problem. it happens when i accelerate enough to where it shifts at ~3000 rpm. i dont notice it much at WOT (if at all) and not at all during normal granny driving around town. i did a search and noticed that some saw this problem after installing a new intake (mostly the IP Z-tube, which i have), but this wasnt happening before.

so here is my problem: i dont wanna get rid of the new TB. Dan does some really nice work and i know this is a necessary component as far as mods and my plans are concerned. however, i wanna at least make sure this isnt going to cause problems down the road, and at best find a way to fix it.

any suggestions or fixes? Dan did let me know about this being a potential side-effect upfront, so i dont fault him at all. i am just hoping someone has had the same problem and has found a way to get it fixed. i'll prolly call Dan monday and see what he thinks, but thought i'd get a head-start with the wealth of knowledge on this board :)

thanks in advance for any help...

btw, i did reset the PCM after installing the new TB. (disconnect neg on battery, hold key in start position for 15-20 secs right?)

it started right up after that and after a couple seconds idled just perfect. it might be 25 rpm's higher than normal, but very smooth. cant wait to run it on the dyno again :) but again, if this thing is fly-by-wire, it kinda concerns me that i would be feeling vibration...anyway, just thought i'd throw in that extra info

I installed mine a few days ago. I have the
same problem. My vibration is off idle only.
I have a shaker hood from proglass.

To solve the fibes... go back to your stock 'airhat' and attach your filter after the stock airhat. This problem is with all aftermarket TBs, due to the intake design.

See it's not a F&B problem after all!

Your other choice is to get a Volant air system, preferably for a RAM with cold air box-- as it has the ports to cancel out the sine wave.

well, i'd really prefer not to have to send back the Z-tube if at all possible. so yer saying this is caused by airflow resonance and the F&B's experience the problem as well? and if the 4.7 is fly-by-wire in the throttle linkage, does that mean the vibration is coming from the engine itself?

We've been telling people this all along-- the vibration problem is not because of any design flaw in the F&B, and that you'll experience this with ANY TB if you remove the stock airhat (it's actually a 90 degree bend, with a couple of air ports to cancel out the vibration). The vibration will be amplified with a higher flowing, or larger diameter TB. Typically people with F&Bs experience a larger amount of vibration due to highflow rate- larger diameter TB. To eliminate this-- try reinstalling your stock airhat config, and see if the vibration subsides. I would bet it will.

From there, you could cut your Z-tube, attach it to the stock airhat tube, and the problem is solved. The ports on the airhat 'box' are the important piece to the puzzle.

well, i'm not about to cut into my Z-tube. it's too pretty to be hacking away at it :) there has got to be a way to break up the airflow without actually diminishing it.

i could prolly send back the Z-tube and exchange it for the Stage 2, but that is not gonna be my first choice. well, i guess i need to talk to Dan and see what he can suggest.

thanks for the info Sam

CRM,
There is another post with answers that are more livable under Performance.
http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/per/3712.html
This suggests a way to weld in a flap in your Z-Tube that will stop this. Hope this helps more than wacking your $225 Pipe and putting that ugly air hat back on.
Good Luck,
Lynn

thanks Lynn, i actually posted on that thread yesterday :)

after talking to Dan (the Fastman) i think i'll try that route first. he's been very cool thru the whole process and i cant give him enough credit for all the help he's provided. i'm definitely keeping the TB but would rather not have to go back to the stock box or anything like that. i'll try the flap and report back on the results.

and if i didnt mention it before, this is the first mod so far where i've felt an increase in performance. i can also feel it in the pedal, but hope to get that fixed :) i should have dyno results in a couple weeks, then i'll know for sure.
